‘a-round’ is an exhibition of still life paintings from Kylie Sirett, styled using pieces from Bison and BRIAN TUNKS, flowers and fruit… and objects from our everyday.

Creative Arts Evening and Berlin Street Party
Live performances, cabaret, dance and jazz music – what’s not to love?
With the theme of ‘Berlin’, don your best costumes out from 1920’s to present day (think Karneval!). Bring the entire family at 5:30pm for an early evening of relaxation and live acoustics, then, from 7 pm head along to McGregor Hall for live jazz and cabaret performances. Friday Night Drinks at Old Parliament House
Gen X and millennials, it’s time to get nostalgic. That’s right—Friday nights at OPH are back! And Gen Z? Allow us to introduce you to your fave new tradition. If you’re of a certain vintage, you may remember the good old days of heading to the House of Reps Courtyard at Old Parliament House for after-work drinks. Well, they’re back!

ACT Rescue and Foster Trivia Night 2024
ACT Rescue and Foster (ARF) presents their 2024 Trivia Night. A fun evening of trivia awaits you and as an extra bonus, all funds raised on the night go towards helping dogs in need.
ARF has been saving dogs for more than 20 years with more than 3,600 dogs rehomed in that time. If you want to make a difference to dogs in the ACT and surrounds, get along to their annual trivia night with host, Trivia King Larry Appley!!
This year the theme will be HOWL-oween (awooooo) with costumes encouraged. Billy the skeleton and his rescue dog skeleton will be collecting donations of toys, treats (not rawhide), collars and leads.

Sundowner
Sundowner – a music festival by Gang Gang Café – will feature 17 artists performing across 2 stages from midday until 10 pm. This 18+ festival will be one of Canberra’s largest suburban parties, celebrating culture, community, and diversity in a unique setting.
With funding from Live Music Australia, and sponsorship from Capital Brewing and Gravity Seltzer, Sundowner offers an expanded experience with market stalls, food options, and chillout spaces for approximately 700 attendees.

Diwali Mela Lantern Festival
The Diwali Mela Lantern Festival is on again in Queanbeyan and there’s something for everyone.
From kids activities, to a best dressed competition for the most vibrant Diwali clothes, traditional and more modern dance, food vendors and more, you can even buy some beautiful Diwali themed items, pick up some freebies and indulge with a henna tattoo! One of the most exciting parts of this event? The lantern parade. From around 8.3 0pm people of all ages and nationalities will journey around part of the river walk with their lanterns in a celebration of light. Don’t have a lantern? Third Run Cinema
After a debut/test season in Cahoots Lab last year, Hannah de Feyter’s ‘Third Run Cinema’ returns to the Juliet Room above Verity Lane Market in October, as part of Canberra Art Biennial.
This temporary microcinema prioritises programming experimental, arthouse and classic world films that are otherwise unavailable to view or stream (legally) in Australia, and screening them in a cosy and accessible context. With four screenings taking place in total (Tuesday 1, 8, 15 and 22 October), film buffs won’t want to miss this.

Iconic Aussie rockers Spiderbait are hitting the road with their Black Betty 20th Anniversary Tour, playing in Canberra to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their seminal 2004 album, Tonight Alright and standout track ‘Black Betty’.

Playing their latest co-creation, Songs of the Southern Skies Volume 2 live on stage, they’ll be performing a varied program with reimagined arrangements of songs by artists such as Aunty Ruby Hunter, Missy Higgins, Sia, Kate Ceberano, Sarah Blasko and more, along with revisiting some favourites from the first Southern Skies instalment.

‘a-round’ by Kylie Sirett
‘a-round’ is an exhibition of still life paintings from Kylie Sirett, styled using pieces from Bison and BRIAN TUNKS, flowers and fruit… and objects from our everyday.
You’ll find 21 paintings of varying sizes and subjects.

Jenna Lee at the COX Gallery
The installation, by artist Jenna Lee, focuses on three paper dillybags as the physical objects used in acts of gathering. Jenna is a Gulumerrejin (Larrakia), Karrajarri and Wardaman woman. She is a Saltwater woman with mixed Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Anglo-Australian ancestry.
Jenna uses art to explore and celebrate her many overlapping identities, and in this exhbition the space is filled with words relating to their use, their materiality, and their purpose, giving these objects back their context within our ecology. Answering the question “What is a dillybag used for?” to gather, to nourish, to sustain is part of the 2024 Canberra Art Biennial.

Foundation Traces | Nick Offer
Nick Offer is a figurative painter whose practice has recently expanded to landscape.
His first solo show since 2022, Foundation Traces addresses his current interest in landscape as a record of human activity. You’ll see six large landscapes, focussing on the remains of the NASA Space Tracking Station in the Orroral Valley, depicting various aspects of the ruins of the former station and investigate its incongruous presence within the natural arena of the valley.

Position x Perspective = Perception | Benni Phillips-Nozdrachev
This solo exhibition by Phillips-Nozdrachev presents miniaturised, reconstructed worlds as large-scale installations.
Reflecting time spent walking alone through forests in Finland, Germany and the Snowy Mountains over the past 11 years, the concept is by collecting and documenting physical, mental and spiritual materials, objects become past, present and future marks of time, translated by environmental consciousness into multidimensional habitats.

Garden Promenade
Featuring textile works by Sharon Peoples, this exhibition speculates on what could have been if Sarah Sophia Banks had travelled to Australia instead of only her brother, Sir Joseph Banks.
Sarah Sophia Banks spent much of her time advancing Joseph’s career while building her own priceless collection of coins, medals, visiting cards, satirical prints and print ephemera. She had an ‘eyebrow-raising fashion sense’ and was often described as a ‘fashion whip’. Artist Sharon Peoples focuses on motifs of plants collected by Sir Joseph Banks, such as flannel flowers, grevilleas and banksias using the live collection of the Australian National Botanic Gardens.

Island Hopping: A Solo Show by Jeffrey Sarmiento
Known for his creative practice exploring cultural identity and the graphic image in glass, Jeffrey Sarmiento embeds layers of information in his intricately constructed objects, sculptures and public commissions.
An expert in kiln formed and digital fabricated glass, he uses cutting and pasting of printed glass lenticular imagery and within the transparent medium, allowing imagery to swim within the pieces. Head along to the Canberra Glassworks to see his work, which helps him to expose complex narratives and create new ways of seeing.

Mythica Ignota: Solo Exhibition by Elliat Rich
Showcasing new work developed during Elliat Rich’s residency at Canberra Glassworks throughout 2024, Mythica Ignota uses mythology as a framework to nest scientific observation and more-than-human orientated values with artefact and narrative.

The Henry Parkes Oration 2024
The Henry Parkes Foundation and Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House (MoAD) is inviting keen Canberrans to attend the Henry Parkes Oration 2024.
This year’s Oration will be delivered by Barrie Cassidy, Chair of the Board at Old Parliament House. Mr Cassidy is one of Australia’s most experienced political correspondents and analysts. He is the creator of the ABC’s ‘Insiders’, a program he hosted for 18 years, and a renowned author and commentator. Attendance is free, but bookings are essential.

Murrulangalang Story Time

Vinyl Vista
This is a collaborative mural making project for young people!
In Vinyl Vista, participants will work with a team of professional artists to develop skills in drawing and printmaking, and work to create vinyl designs for installation in the Tuggeranong Arts Centre gender-neutral bathroom. Sessions include drawing with Robbie Karmel, printmaking with Clare Jackson, creating a collaborative work with Emma Rani Hodges, designing the mural, and installing the mural at TAC.
Open to young people aged 13 to 25, participants must attend all sessions and places are strictly limited to 12. Vinyl Vista will run weekly on Thursday evenings, from Thursday 26 September until Thursday 24 October.

Strange pages: Investigating artists’ books with Dr Caren Florance
Join Dr Caren Florance as she presents a lecture on her 2024 National Library Fellowship research into artists’ books (books made by artists as art).
She’ll talk about how the National Library came to collect them, what problems arose with cataloguing them, and how they inspired a broad, vibrant collection of Australian artists’ books that continues to grow.

Open Gardens Spring
Each spring and autumn, Open Gardens Canberra opens a diverse range of interesting and beautiful open gardens in Canberra, Queanbeyan and surrounds. This October, you can explore the ‘My Therapy’ in Gerrilong Gardens in Reid, the ‘BeaverLea’ & ‘Narrawong’ side by side in Astelia Place, Rivett, ‘Hillside’ in Sullivan Crescent, Wanniassa and ‘Fairview’ in Euree Street, Reid.
All visitors are welcome and there is a $10 entry fee for non-member adults that helps fund community grants and a horticultural scholarship.
