Sci-fi under the stars? Outdoor movies come to Mount Stromlo Observatory

There’s nothing like spending a balmy evening under the stars – but how about watching a movie on the iconic 74-inch dome of Mount Stromlo Observatory?

This spring and summer, Mount Stromlo Observatory is offering so much more than spectacular views over Canberra and the Brindabellas – it’s bringing an out-of-this-world experience to Canberra as the giant telescope becomes an outdoor cinema screen over the coming months. 

Inviting locals to grab a blanket, settle in on the grass, and watch movies play out under the night sky, the Stromlo Outdoor Cinema is holding six movie sessions that all ages will enjoy. And because there’s nothing like a theme, the lineup is something every sci-fi lover will gravitate towards.

And we hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the first session is already sold out. Kicking off the screenings, Friday 23 October (this Friday) will see Christopher Nolan’s deep space opus Interstellar take over the big screen.

But worry not. Because on Friday 13 November, you can galax-see Matt Damon in The Martian, while on Friday 4 December the 2016 film Arrival will have you thinking about all things extraterrestrial.

For those looking for something a bit more historically accurate, you can also watch three female African-American mathematicians play a pivotal role in astronaut John Glenn’s launch into orbit on Friday 11 December with Hidden Figures.

Have children? Families will be over the moon with Wall-E showing on Friday 8 January and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy hitting the screen on Friday 15 January.

Doors open at 7.30 pm, and the movie starts after dusk; perfect for a space-themed night out.
