Seeking new friends? HerCanberra presents Click + Connect: The Dressmaker

Posted on

Want to make new friends in Canberra? Our first Click + Connect event for 2019 is here.

You asked, so we’re delivering.

When we published our ‘Are you looking to make new friends in Canberra?’ editorial earlier this week, we didn’t know what response to expect—are Canberrans still struggling to make connections in their city?

However, when we checked our mailing list the next day and saw hundreds of names (like, five hundred), we knew the answer was yes. So now we’re keeping up our end of the bargain.

On Thursday 15 August, we’ll be holding our first HerCanberra Click + Connect event of the year.

What is Click + Connect? They’re casual, low-key, low-cost events where like-minded people can connect and hopefully find some meaningful friendships. These aren’t networking events, they’re simply an opportunity to hang out and meet new people while taking in some of the cool things our city has to offer.

Hosted by our friends at one of Canberra’s most glamorous national institutions, the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA), Click + Connect: The Dressmaker will be a night of fashion, food and friends.

Upon arrival at the NFSA, you’ll be greeted with a drink, generous grazing platters and the opportunity to mingle with fellow Clickers before enjoying a private curator-led tour of the aching glamourous The Dressmaker Costume Exhibition.

On show until 18 August, The Dressmaker Costume Exhibition has been designed by award-winning designer and exhibition curator Marion Boyce, who received acclaim for her work on Miss Fisher’s Murder MysteriesThe Starter Wife and The Dressmaker.

Centring on the return of couture dressmaker Tilly Dunnage to her hometown of Dungatar, 2015’s The Dressmaker is a bittersweet darkly comedic take on rural Australia and the transformative powers of fashion.

Once you’ve had some time to mingle, Curator Jenny Gall will lead a fun and informative 20-minute tour through the exhibition, so you can get an inside look at the story behind these stunning costumes. After the tour, you’ll have a chance to take in the exhibition on your own terms and mingle with other guests. You’ll have plenty to talk about!

The Dressmaker Sarah Snook (Trudy), Hayley Magnus (Prudence), Amanda Woodhams (Nancy), Tracy Harvey (Lois) and Rebecca Gibney (Muriel). Photographer: Ben King.

At the end of the event, you’ll be gifted The Dressmaker Costume Catalogue (RRP $25), the perfect souvenir of this sumptuous exhibition.

Tickets are $29.95 per person via Eventbrite and include a glass of house red, white, beer or soft drink on arrival*, grazing platters, entry to The Dressmaker Costume Exhibition (normally $13), a curator-led floor talk and souvenir catalogue (worth $25). But hurry, tickets won’t last long.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this like speed dating but for friends?

Yes, this is an event about making new friends, but no one is going to force you to chat to anyone. This is a casual environment with no ‘getting to know you’ games.

Then how will I strike up a conversation with a stranger?

We know there’s nothing worse than awkward silences, so we have a few tricks up our sleeve to help you break the ice. The HC Team will also be on hand to help with intros if you’re struggling!

Can I bring a friend or two?

Of course! You don’t have to come solo—buy as many tickets as you and your mates like.

Is this a romantic event?

Nope, sorry.

Is this just for women?

No! This is a gender-neutral event—we know that friends come in all shapes, sizes and gender identities!

I missed out on a ticket. Will there be another Click + Connect soon?

We’re working to make Click + Connect events a regular part of our offering, but please keep in mind that we’re a tiny team of five full-time staff.

If you’re keen to be kept in the loop for future events, sign up to our Click + Connect mailing list here or keep an eye on our website.

I’m a business who would love to host one of these events. How do I get in touch?

We’d love to chat! Send our Business Development Manager Sarah an email at sarah@hercanberra.com.au.

This event has been generously sponsored by the National Film and Sound Archive and Biginelli’s Catering.
