Piece by Piece: From Concept to Completion

Posted on

From the smallest spark of inspiration to a fully formed idea, to a completed piece.

This is the journey a design student takes on their way to an extensive body of work.

Next week, the University of Canberra will present Piece By Piece, the inaugural Faculty of Arts and Design Graduate Showcase, combining the many branches of the faculty for the first time.

The show will feature work from Architecture, Interior Architecture, Industrial Design and Graphic Design, as well as displays by students in media arts, web design, creative writing, film, heritage and museums, and a range of other faculty areas.

“You can expect to see some amazing projects and designs at the showcase,” says Alison Barracluff, one of the graduating students.

“The best part of the showcase, in my opinion, is the wide range of work being displayed,”

“The ‘Piece by Piece’ branding is a reflection of the gradual transition from amateur to a qualified profession,” she explains. “Year after year, unit after unit, step by step, until finally we find ourselves ready to close the chapter on our studies and begin our careers.”

Alison’s branding was chosen by the faculty and her peers for the event and she’s spent the last few months helping plan the event.

“The aesthetics of the branding is reminiscent of the Bauhaus movement. When researching the brief, I kept thinking about the parallels between the influential school of design and the showcase. They are both a place where all these creative fields are united under the one umbrella, creating a really strong community of design.”

The showcase is being held at the University of Canberra refectory, and to make up ground on the catering available on the night and free admission, the faculty are producing a very limited run of tote bags, designed, of course, by the students.

The bags are being made to order and are available through Etsy – orders must be in before Friday 11 of November or you can purchase one on the night at the showcase.

“The uniting of all Faculty of Arts and Design Majors into the one exhibition is going to create a huge shift in thinking within the participating students and the Canberra community,” explains Alison.

“It provides a chance for these separate creative groups to come together and learn from one another. We get really caught up in our own studies sometimes, so it’s a great opportunity to meet other students that share the same passion but offer wider perspectives. I truly believe that this inaugural showcase is going to grow and get better every year.”

For those wishing to continue the celebration of design, (and, dare I say, graduation?) the after-party will be held at The Well, also on the University of Canberra campus.
