Real romance takes centre stage with Trent Dalton’s ‘Love Stories’ in Canberra

A new work that tells a city’s worth of stories is coming to Canberra’s stage this September – and it packs an emotional punch.
“Can you please tell me a love story?”
It was a simple question with not-so-simple answers and after spending two months lugging a sky blue 1960s Olivetti typewriter to a busy Brisbane street corner to hear strangers tell a love story, the result from Australian author Trent Dalton was extraordinary.
A warm, wise, poignant, funny and moving book about love in all its guises, Love Stories took the world by storm. And now, the smash-hit stage adaptation will make its much-anticipated debut in Canberra this September.
Taking to the stage from Wednesday 24 until Saturday 27 September at the Canberra Theatre Centre for a strictly limited season, the announcement follows its original sold-out debut in Brisbane last year, which played to more than 20,000 people.
Making audiences, laugh, cry and feel all the feels, the show has been adapted by Tim McGarry, with additional writing and story by Trent Dalton and Fiona Franzmann and directed by Sam Strong, bringing to life the love stories collected on the streets, with Trent’s own love story with wife Fiona interweaved throughout.
And after being bombarded daily in his DMs, Trent says that he’s looking forward to the show taking to the stage in Canberra.
“The real-life people who told these stories came from all corners of Australia and it’s to all corners of this country that we’re trying to reach with this remarkable stage play.”
“The show reaches into your soul and doesn’t let it go for 100 minutes of aching, rib-tickling, heart-breaking, heart-restoring love-filled theatre. You drive home being reminded of all that is wondrous in this life. All that is wondrous about love.”
Haven’t read the book? Don’t worry. This raw and emotional journey will still pull at heartstrings as it delivers exactly what its title promises.
Best known for his semi-autobiographical novel Boy Swallows Universe (which has since been adapted for the stage and into a hit Netflix series), Canberra Theatre Centre Director Alex Budd is excited to bring the theatrically stunning production of Trent’s to Canberra.
“Trent Dalton is one of Australia’s most beloved authors and I’m really looking forward to bringing his best-selling work Love Stories to new life, on stage for audiences in Canberra.”
Trent Dalton’s Love Stories goes on Pre-sale from 10 am Tuesday 29 April before general sale begins 10 am Wednesday 30 April.
