Reconciliation in the Park: song, dance, community

Posted on

Few Canberra public holidays are as significant as Monday 27 May – Reconciliation Day.

Last year, the ACT became the first Australian jurisdiction to formally dedicate a public holiday to reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the traditional owners of Australia.

The date is significant, as Reconciliation Day is always held on the first Monday that falls on—or after—the anniversary of 27 May, the date of the 1967 Referendum, which also marks the start of National Reconciliation Week.

Reconciliation in the Park is the perfect way to spend the day, with a host of free and family-friendly offerings including musical performances and hands-on activities as well as a chance to meet some local sporting personalities, all in Civic’s leafy Glebe Park. Here’s what you can look forward to.

SEE + DANCE

Visitors can spread out a picnic blanket and enjoy a range of live performances across the day.

Melbourne duo The Merindas (pictured – you’ll recognise them from their appearance in The Sapphires) will be bringing a sizzling electro-tribal pop sound to the stage alongside local teenagers Grace Obst and Jye Hopkins who will sing in local Indigenous languages.

Joining them will be dancers from Kulture Break and the Wiradjuri Echoes with The Chesterfield Band and the Woden Valley Youth Choir singing select songs in Ngnunawal language. Rounding out the live performances is popular Indigenous children’s entertainer Johnny Huckle.

LEARN, MAKE + CREATE

The day’s activities will be centred around creating meaningful conversations to develop a deeper understanding of our national story and Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Around Glebe Park there will be a range of hands-on activities including craft, Indigenous art and language workshops. A number of ACT sporting personalities from the Brumbies, Cricket ACT, Netball ACT, Warriors Basketball Club and Volleyball ACT will also appear across the day with activities offered by many of the clubs and teams.

Visitors both young and old will have the chance to leave a message of reconciliation in the Reflection Forest. There will also be a King Brown Walking Trail to follow the activities happening around the Park, with maps available on the day.

EAT + DRINK

Make a day of it with a picnic or morning tea from the food and coffee vans that will be on site. There will also be community stalls to browse.
