So You Think You Can Drag is back this weekend — with a twist!

Posted on

Canberra’s beloved drag extravaganza is back from this weekend – but this time it’s so much more than just one night.

Following on from the roaring success of So You Think You Can Drag: All Stars held in April, Canberra’s premier drag entertainers Phish and Phreak are bringing a new way to experience homegrown drag to Canberrans – and it all kicks off this weekend.

This time, instead of one night only, So You Think You Can Drag: Season 3 will take place across three weekends on 4, 11 and 25 November at 7 pm at Louie Louie bar, upstairs at Verity Lane Market.

A fun night out for fans of drag, Ru Paul’s Drag Race or really anyone with good taste, So You Think You Can Drag follows a similar format to the aforementioned iconic TV show.

For those unfamiliar with the artform, drag blends a high-octane, high-glitter mix of fashion, comedy, characterisation, musical talent and lip sync, with the Drag Race-style format challenging drag queens, drag kings and non-binary performers to show off their hilarious personalities, gorgeous outfits and jaw-dropping talents across the evening.

“The opening runway will be inspired by heroes and villains and the queens’ very best drag of their own choosing to close,” explains Douglas Robinson from Phish and Phreak.

“Challenges include a drag roulette lip sync battles where the queens will face head-to-head against random song choices – based on our event at 88mph on the first Thursday of each month – and there will be a talent show during the finale.”

“The team is planning more surprises and twists for the cast and we will have special guest appearances from past seasons cast and winners on stage at the judging table.”

Tickets can be booked at CanberraDrag.com and purchased for each individual week or you’ll scoop a discount if you buy tickets for all three nights (and yes, there are VIP tables available too!).

So without further ado, let’s meet your cast of So You Think You Can Drag Season 3!

“A rising star in the Canberra drag scene, Velvette is an technicolour beam of camp-pop realness illuminating the brutalist jungle of our nation’s Capital.

Often described as a walking migraine, this Warhol-esque doll is a vision of solar eclipse through 3D beer googles; observe at your own risk. Eclectic eccentricity meets DIY craft catalogue from your nana’s coffee table in Velvette’s self-described muppet chic.

Serving suggestion: ensure you have ibuprophen on hand when you enter her kaleidoscopic dimension, chase with lime and blueberry ice.”

“Chubby, hairy, flirty and whorey Aurora is a baby bedroom queen dipping her toe in the water that is the outside world , don’t let her “pretty“ face fool you there’s a whole lot of weird under that beard cover she is ‘Aurora’.”

“Zoe Vedette is your ultimate Y2K barbie and was a finalist in Wollongong’s “Drag Race Down South”, where she has since been known as one of the Gong’s fiercest lip-syncers!

Having recently moved to Canberra, she’s ready to share her talent with a whole new audience.”

Lola Lust

“Blurring the lines between burlesque and drag Lola Lust is the pastel pink fantasy and life-size barbie we all wish we could be when we grew up; the glitz and glam of a showgirl served with a side of 90s nerd-core.

A producer, MC and performer, Lola’s brand of draglesque brings a fun, unique, and slightly ridiculous energy to any stage.”

“Floozy is an enthusiastic and earnest performer, with a love of musicals and passion for participation.

She was unanimously voted ‘unexpected star’ for her truly memorable portrayal of ‘Court Stenographer’ in the AMS 2019 production of Legally Blonde at the Concord RSL, as well as garnering the esteemed ‘Team Spirit’ award from Sydney Roller Derby League in 2018.”

“She’s booked, she’s blessed, She’s Oxy-Kodeine!

Bringing you country gal gone bad, this recently proclaimed stunt queen will drop to her knees faster than a twink on Onlyfans. Just try to keep up with her spins and hair flips!

Her flirty persona and bodily charms will have you hooked from first glance. Be careful though, she’s a heart-breaker.”

“Tina Cox is a proud First Nation’s Queen living on Ngunnawal country. From tribe Wiradjuri, She’s here to make a change showing blak excellence though her drag.

Previously having performed for the Too Deadly Night and with the Celebration of the arts for Wear It Purple. She is only new to drag and looking forward to learning and performing so much more.”

“Get ready for a good rough ride! Inya Endo will get you in a firm grasp and shove her giant personality down your throat. This hyper femme mess is the strange love child of local burlesque legend Empress Eyrie, Weird Barbie and that dirty sock you left under your bed.

Inya’s gonna give you a great time, and give it to you raw – and you’ll want to take it in any way you can. Uninhibited unstoppable and unprotected! — Inya Endo? In *your* end-o.”
