T-Rex dance-offs, unicorn races and more – the Compassionate Stakes are back in all their inflatable glory

It’s the race that stops the nation – and this year there’s no doubt locals will be stopping in their tracks as inflatable unicorns and T-Rex’s race each other in Glebe Park.
Bringing some fun to Melbourne Cup Day for those who choose to say ‘Nup to the cup’, The Compassionate Stakes are back in all their inflatable glory on Sunday 2 November to take over Glebe Park and offer an ethical alternative to traditional racing events.
Founded by the team behind Little Oaks Sanctuary (a registered not-for-profit organisation that offers sanctuary to a range of farmed animals including alpacas, birds, goats, horses, and pigs) the event has become something of a local favourite for its unique, family-friendly, and cruelty-free alternative to horse racing.
“Great times don’t have to come at the expense of animals,” says Kate Luke, Co-Founder of Little Oak Sanctuary.
“The Compassionate Stakes shows exactly that – joy, community, and compassion, all without a single horse being pushed to its limits.”
And this year is even bigger.
Along with hosting T-Rex and unicorn novelty races for adults every half-hour, the 2025 Compassionate Stakes will also see the addition of some adorable dino-themed races for kids, and hilarious T-Rex dance-offs. T-Rex and unicorn costumes will be provided to participants, but you’re welcome to bring your own.
But if donning an inflatable costume isn’t for you, The Fashion Off The Field competition is back for another year with MC Faux Nee Phish roaming the crowd to find the most fun, fabulous and fierce outfit of the day – just make sure to leave the bird feathers at home.
Keeping to the theme, vegan food and drink will also be available on the day to help fuel runners and spectators alike, with the Au Lac Vietnamese food truck serving up some street food options along with sweet treats from Dessert Quartet, Little Oak’s famous veggie sausage sizzle and more.
“Every year, we’re blown away by the pure joy this event brings,” says Kate.
“It’s about celebrating life and showing what compassion in action looks like — or as we like to say, being the change you want to see in the world.”
The event is free for spectators, with race entry tickets available on the website and on the day (if spots are still available).
And with all proceeds raised going towards Little Oak Sanctuary to support their work in feeding and caring for several ex-racehorses, you know that you’ll be doing good while having a guaranteed good time.
