DESIGN CANBERRA

Throughout November over 100 events, exhibitions, talks, tours, activations, markets, collaborations, artist studios and open homes will be showcased as DESIGN Canberra. See the nation’s capital transformed into a new platform for the best in design.

DESIGN Canberra 2017 will be inspired by the spirit of modernism, a celebration of the creativity, experimentation and optimism for which Canberra’s mid-century architecture is acclaimed. The event will be led by the idea of Canberra as a living design laboratory; a global city of design.

From the time of Walter and Marion Griffin’s visionary design a century ago, to iconic experimental modernist architecture of the 1950s and 60s, through to contemporary and sustainable design developments today, Canberra has been – and will always be – a living design laboratory.

The festival, now in its 4th year, is for all interests and ages and most events are free.

LOVE/CHAMBERLAIN

Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres is delighted to present Love/Chamberlain, a new Australian theatre work presented as part of their Ralph Indie program in 2017.

Love/Chamberlain is a hyper-real fantasy portrait of Courtney Love and Lindy Chamberlain. These time-travelling apparitions meet each other after the disappearance of baby Azaria and in the ferment of rumour following Kurt Cobain’s death. Both women are unjustly accused of murder: Chamberlain in a law- court and Love in the seedy territory of conspiracy theorists and documentary movie-makers. With a heady sense of the uncanny, Love/Chamberlain explores the way the stories of these two women have permeated into Australia’s collective consciousness, and asks how we treat women who are accused of murder or who deviate from expected social norms of behaviour.

Happening from Tuesday 7 until Saturday 11 of November from 7.30-8.45pm at Gorman Arts Centre, Braddon. Tickets from $25pp available through Eventbrite.

POLIFEMY: SOMETHING BORROWED, ALL IS NEW

Join female vocal ensemble Polifemy for an exciting romp through music history, where new creations emerge from the old; where something is borrowed, and all is new. Poet Ezra Pound exhorted artists in the modern age to make it new! Polifemy’s director Robyn Mellor takes her lead from Pound’s rallying cry to show how new music can be generated from old.

The program will feature original songs and instrumental works paired with the beautiful, wild and woolly results of their musical appropriation. Renaissance solo songs become virtuosic Italianate divisions; a single-voiced scrap of plainchant morphs into an elaborate four-part motet; a simple folk song is rendered all but unrecognisable in a complex arrangement for recorders; a fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach sparkles anew when swung suavely in Swingle style. All within the grand architecture of the High Court of Australia.

Robyn will direct Polifemy and recorder ensemble Walking the Dog and invite assorted musical friends to join the fun.

Happening Sunday November 12 from 1.30-3pm at the High Court of Australia, Parkes. Free Entry.

Showtime Saturday: Broadway Nights

Casino Canberra’s Showtime Saturdays will see different themed performances every fortnight by some of Australia’s best talent. Entertainment starts at 9pm and is completely FREE.

The festival, now in its 4th year, is for all interests and ages and most events are free.

THERE AND BACK AGAIN – EXHIBITION OPENING

There and back again is an exhibition of screen prints by Canberra based visual artist Jemima Parker exploring moments in time and experience of place, through photography and screen printing processes. This exhibition is being presented as part of DESIGN Canberra, celebrating and promoting Canberra as a global city of design.

Jemima has taken images of her local surrounds, childhood home and recent travels throughout Australia and abroad  – a record of fleeting moments captured on her phone. She re-invents the images as screen prints – cutting down paper, mixing inks and hand printing, bringing the works slowly to life – a direct contrast to today’s instantly posted image. Soft, faded backgrounds, and warm, brown/black for the images themselves, suggest these contemporary scenes are in fact of a bygone time, evoking nostalgia.

On 9 November at 6pm at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space, 19 Furneaux Street, Manuka. Entry is free. Visit the website for more information: www.designcanberrafestival.com.au/event/there-and-back-again-jemima-parker-opening-event/
