Lantona Fountain of Versailles

Latona Fountain of Versailles

Versailles Treasures from the Palace

The NGA has worked with the French Government and the Palace of Versailles to deliver a major exhibition opening this Friday.

More than 7 million people make the journey to the Palace of Versailles every year to experience a phenomenon central to French history – Louis XIV’s architectural masterpiece, the centre of his court of absolute rule and the embodiment of luxury. The luxurious interiors and gardens were often the backdrop to enchanting and extravagant celebrations including masked balls, theatre, opera, concerts, sumptuous feasts and fireworks.

With the support of the French Government, the NGA’s partnership with Versailles has brought this experience to Australia, which has never before been seen outside France.

“We are very excited to be working with Versailles to bring exclusively to Canberra a truly astonishing exhibition and look forward to sharing more details in coming months,” said Gerard Vaughan, NGA Director.

Book your tickets here: nga.gov.au/Versailles

Open from Friday 9 December 2016 until Monday 17 April, 2017 at the National Gallery of Australia, Parkes Place, Parkes. See website for more information: nga.gov.au/Versailles

Another Evening with Josh Pyke and Bob Evans

Beloved Aussie troubadours Josh Pyke and Bob Evans are embarking on a massive national co-headline tour, Another Evening with Josh Pyke and Bob Evans. The two friends have been playing music together for ten years and are thrilled to be coming to Canberra!

Having embarked on the first Evening with Josh and Bob a decade ago this year, fans can expect a finely honed performance and a varied, reminiscent repertoire of knockout songs from two of Australia’s best. Bob Evans, the moniker for renowned frontman of Jebadiah Kevin Mitchell, enthuses, “That first Evening with Josh and Bob ten years ago was a fairly rudimental affair in retrospect. We were both very much still finding our feet. Now, we have higher professional standards to which we hold ourselves and those bawdy jokes of a burgeoning bromance have developed in to, well, bawdy dad jokes. Bah, who am I kidding? We’re not that different ten years on.”

Happening Saturday 10 December, 8pm at The Street Theatre, 15 Childers Street.

See website for more information.

Jimmy Barnes; Working Class Boy: An evening of stories and songs

Hear Jimmy Barnes telling his life story for the first time on the intimate Playhouse stage.

Jimmy Barnes; Working Class Boy: An evening of stories and songs will see Jimmy sharing stories from his troubled childhood and delinquent adolescence. It will also see him delivering intimate musical performances of some key songs drawn from his earliest years.

“Just like the book, this live show will tell the story of an imperfect childhood that has led to me becoming an imperfect adult”, explains Jimmy. “I spent most of my life running from my childhood and now it seems like my time to face it. So this is the story of a lifetime spent running away. Running from fear. Running from shame but at the same time running from hope. I’m not running anymore”

This unique live theatrical production is a companion piece to the eagerly anticipated first volume of his memoirs – Working Class Boy. The book was written entirely by Jimmy. It tells the raw and confronting story of fleeing the poverty of Scotland only to endure violence and abuse as an immigrant in the suburbs of Adelaide.

Happening Tuesday 6 December until Sunday 11 December, 8pm-10pm at The Playhouse, Canberra Theatre Centre, Civic Square and London Circuit.

Bill Bailey – Larks in Transit

It’s 20 years since Bill Bailey first performed in Australia, and he returns to mark this milestone with a new show. Larks in Transit is a compendium of travellers’ tales and the general shenanigans of 20 years as a travelling comedian.

With musical virtuosity, surreal tangents, and trademark intelligence, Bill tackles politics, philosophy, the pursuit of happiness, death metal, ringtones … and an excruciating encounter with Paul McCartney.

Two decades of life as a comic filtered through what the Daily Telegraph calls ‘the brainiest comic of his generation’.

Happening Thursday 8 December, 8pm at Royal Theatre, National Convention Centre, Constitution Avenue.

See website for more information and ticket purchase.

Alex Williamson: Open Up

Don’t miss Alex Williamson’s latest musical, multi-media spectacular! No one knows who Alex Williamson really is. International philanthropist? Depressed soul? Child slave trafficker? Luckily for us, Alex prefers a room full of rowdy strangers over a psychiatrists chair when it comes to outpouring his most degenerate thoughts & hilariously far fetched interpretations of this world.

Alex keeps going from strength to strength! In the last 12 months he’s had a starring role in his first feature film. Me And My Mates Vs The Zombie Apocalypse was released in late 2015 and is already achieving cult status, sold-out seasons at all the major Australian comedy festivals as well as the Edinburgh Fringe, and a social media following that’s grown to over 2 and a half million subscribers and hundreds of millions of views!

Warning: This show may contain extreme language.

Happening Friday 9 December, 8pm at The Street Theatre, 15 Childers Street.

See website for more information.

Boy and Bear

Five-time ARIA winners Boy and Bear are headed to Canberra as part of their regional tour.

Excited to be hitting the road, Killian Gavin (vocals, guitar), enthuses, “We’ll be changing it up night to night really, often the venue depicts what kind of show we will go for. A nice noisy pub makes a great rock show while the intimate theatres allow a lot more room for dynamics and banter. Keeps us on our toes and stops us from being repetitive…It’s been a long time coming for us, this regional run. But we always love playing to as many local cities as we can, it takes time to get back there but we’re looking forward to it.”

18+ only.

Happening Thursday 8 December from 8pm at ANU Bar, Corner University Avenue and North Road, Acton.

See website for more information and ticket purchase.

The Monkees

On September 8, 1965, when producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider placed a classified ad in The Hollywood Reporter seeking four insane boys, they had no idea that they were about to unleash Monkee-mania! But that’s exactly what happened the following year when the first episode of The Monkees debuted on NBC on September 12, 1966.

50 years later and The Monkees anniversary show is coming to Australia and New Zealand. After sell-out North American shows, and with a brand new album Good Times! in the charts, Micky and Peter are bringing the Monkees magic downunder.

The Monkees 50th Anniversary show is a unique concert experience. Times may change but infectious pop hits and wonderfully charismatic characters stay in our hearts and memories forever.

Happening Friday 9 December, 8pm at Llewellyn Hall, Childers Street.

See website for more information and ticket purchase.

Open from Friday 9 December 2016 until Monday 17 April, 2017 at the National Gallery of Australia, Parkes Place, Parkes. See website for more information: nga.gov.au/Versailles.

CANBERRA GLASSWORKS: In Depth: Joanna Bone with Aaron Micallef

Inspired by found objects including sea grasses, sand dollars and other marine creatures, Joanna Bone has revisited her childhood love of pattern and repetition in this new body of extraordinary glass works. The sense of depth and layers within the surface of these pieces engages viewers and invites intimate observation and quiet contemplation.  She has collaborated with Aaron Micallef in hot glass and shared studio space in Brisbane for the past four years.  Aaron and Joanna’s shared aesthetic approach, revolving around pattern and symmetry, contributes to the success of their working partnership. What started as a photographic documentation of Joanna’s work, has moved beyond the pure recording of processes, with Aaron creating stunning imagery that captures and reinterprets Joanna’s body of works in this exhibition.

Happening Friday 9 December 2016 to Sunday 15 January 2017 at Canberra Glassworks, 11 Wentworth Ave, Kingston.

Down to Earth

A collection of works created by South Coast artist Nicole Grimm-Hewitt. Down to Earth explores the beauty of our planet from an aerial perspective and tempts the viewer to think differently about how they see things.

Grimm-Hewitt’s artwork recreates the patterns, shapes and colours that the land and ocean present to us. They remind us that we stand upon a living breathing planet that is constantly changing and repairing itself. Some of the patterns are naturally formed, but many are scars that we have inflicted. Sometimes it’s not until we can physically see the magnitude of this, that we truly realise the impact we are having on the land beneath us and the waterways that surround us.

The Nishi Gallery is a space in NewActon dedicated to the presentation of exhibitions that explore our curiosities on local identity, objects and their meaning, the natural world, design experimentation and artisanal making.

Happening Thursday 24 November until Sunday 11 December daily from 11am to 3pm at Nishi Gallery, 17 Kendall Lane
