This week’s Great Walk is for a great cause

Posted on

Eleven Canberra region women are training hard this week so that they can walk Menslink’s Great Walk – over 140 kilometres in support of Menslink.

Now in its third year, this year will see the most women ever take part in the Menslink Great Walk, and the women – a great mix of local community leaders, business owners, senior executives and overall just really big-hearted Canberra women  – are tying their shoelaces, hitting the streets for walk training, and fuelling up for what will be long walks of up to 30 kilometres per day over five days along the Canberra Centenary Trail.

It’s all about raising awareness and much-needed funds to support Menslink’s programs that support young men and their families in the Canberra community, including volunteer mentoring, free counselling and school programs.

These programs help improve mental fitness, combat domestic violence, reduce youth suicide, increase respect and positive behaviours and help create stronger communities.

The women taking part in the Menslink Great Walk this year are Julie Dobinson from DDCS Lawyers, Lucie Hood from Doma Group, Catherine Coles from Parker Coles Curtis Family Lawyers, Sarah Hardie from Isla & Gray, Renee Beerworth from Spinach Ventures, Stephanie Bates from Chartertech, Kim Marshall from Canberra Southern Cross Club, Trina Dooley from Adamas Financial, Sarah D’Arcy from PwC, Sarah Rajic from Capital Recruit, and Laura Cunningham from Centrered. Together, the group has already raised over $20,000 for Menslink to date.

Laura reveals that she’s taking on the walk to overcome some personal physical challenges she’s faced over the past five years.

“If I can be brave and put my physical ability on the line to complete this walk and raise funds for Menslink, then imagine how many young men and boys I can empower to be brave too, and to seek the help they so desperately need,” says Laura.

“What made me decide to say yes is that there are so many boys and young men in our community that don’t always get the opportunity to be brave and make positive decisions to have positive outcomes in their life and be great men in our community.

“I’m fundraising to ensure Menslink are able to continue to support the young men and boys in our community to make positive choices in their lives.”

In another first this year, walkers’ friends, family and members of the public are invited to walk the final day and leg of the walk on the Great Walk Community Day, taking place on Saturday 11 November.

Walkers on the final leg depart Parliament House (Federation Mall) at 8 am and walk anti-clockwise around Lake Burley Griffin finishing up at the Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club for the finish line event at 2 pm – walkers do not need to register, just join on the day.

Laura and the other 25 walkers taking part in the Menslink Great Walk this year will head off from their starting point at Parliament House today, Tuesday 7 November, and there’s still plenty of time to donate to support them.
