Five events to romanticise your weekend in Canberra

Posted on

Is your weekend routine feeling a little dull and overdone? Here are five events to help make your weekend feel like a movie (instead of just watching one).

From stargazing to a cheese masterclass, a wine festival and a Great Gatsby Gala, you won’t be able to resist donning some rose-coloured glasses.

Go stargazing at the National Arboretum

This breathtaking 90-minute stargazing experience is the perfect way to spend a winter night.

Led by a passionate local astronomer, you’ll use a state-of-the-art telescope to observe the wonders of the universe – from the Moon’s craters and seas to Saturn’s rings, Jupiter and its moons, Mars, Venus, the Orion Nebula, star clusters, and more.

Along with hearing some fascinating stories about the constellations (including their history and cultural significance), you’ll also get the chance to ask questions as you snuggle up under warm blankets with a hot chocolate or organic herbal tea.

Who knows? You might even see a shooting star. Name something more romantic than that.

Friday 24 and Saturday 24 July | National Arboretum Canberra, Forest Drive, Molonglo | Book here.

Attend a raclette and cheese masterclass

Forget making a cheeseboard at home – sit back and let the experts do the hard work for you.  Marble & Grain is joining forces with Le Cheeserie for an afternoon that puts extraordinary cheese front and centre (and yes, there will also be wine).

Leading you through an intimate experience, the two-hour session will feature premium cheeses, canapés, and a live raclette finale with matched wines. Created with cheese-lovers in mind, you’ll learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about artisan cheeses.

Saturday 25 July | Marble & Grain, 25 Mort Street, Braddon | Book here.

Sip your way through the Fireside Festival

Can’t resist a glass of red on a cold day? Until mid-August, the Fireside Festival will be leading wine lovers through a diverse array of captivating fireside experiences.

Ranging from chef dinners to mini wine festivals, bonfires and much more, the event line-up this weekend includes fireside raclette and firepits, and truffle cheese platters!

Check the full program here and grab your partner in wine to plan your weekend.

Friday 24 July until Sunday 9 August | Various locations | Book here.

Have a movie marathon at the NFSA

There’s nothing like curling up for a movie in Canberra’s Art Deco cinema. This weekend, grab a blanket and settle in for a long afternoon of back-to-back Christopher Nolan films.

Playing Memento, Inception and Interstellar, there will be refreshment breaks with mulled wine, hot chocolate and goodies from Dom’s Deli available. Book a Movie Marathon Pass for $45 to see all three movies!

Saturday 25 July | National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, McCoy Circuit, Acton | Book here.

Party like it’s 1926

Channel your inner flapper and be transported back to the 1920s with Hotel Kurrajong Canberra’s Great Gatsby Gala. Beginning with a themed cocktail and canapés on arrival, your ticket will include a two-course meal and three-hour beverage package.

With the Canberra City Band playing throughout the night and live performances from Canberra Swing Katz, make sure you wear your best dancing shoes so you can crack out the Charleston!

Saturday 25 July | Hotel Kurrajong Canberra, 8 National Circuit, Barton | Book here.
