What not to miss at the Canberra Moon Festival
Posted on
Canberra’s premier multi-Asian cultural event is back – and it sounds more beautiful than ever.
That’s right, the Canberra Moon Festival is returning to our events calendar after taking a break in 2022; set to transform the city once again into a spectacular showcase of culture, community, and culinary delights.
The Moon Festival (aka Mid-Autumn Festival) is a time in the lunar calendar that traditionally celebrates harvest and reunion in many Asian cultures. A favourite of the community in 2017; the Canberra Moon Festival is the first multi-Asian cultural festival event in Canberra, shining a light on local food, artists, and cultural groups – and this year is set to be even bigger.
Expecting over 55,000 attendees across three days, the 2024 Canberra Moon Festival will not only have cultural activities, but also live band performances, an LED dragon parade, sand art displays, martial arts demonstrations, diverse food stalls, multicultural performances, an enchanting lantern street, stunning Giant LED Moon and Rabbit installations, a wishing tree, and more.
And while the official program hasn’t been released yet, there are a few things you need to keep an eye out for at this free celebration of culture, community, and culinary delights.
Taking place from 5 pm Friday 6 until 3 pm Sunday 8 September in City Walk and Petrie Plaza, read on and start planning!
Witness the attempt to make the world’s longest noodle
You read that right. This year, at the Canberra Moon Festival you’ll be able to witness the exciting attempt to make the world’s longest noodle. The current record is held by Xiangnian Food Co., Ltd. in China with a noodle over 3,000 metres long.
A delicious and time-consuming task (according to the Guinness World Records the ingredients included 40 kg of bread flour, 26.8 litres of water, and 0.6 kg of salt and Henan with staff spending 17 hours rolling out the enormous noodle), our only question is…will you also get the chance to eat it?
Eat your way through Asia via delish street food
It’s a highlight for a reason. With over 20 stalls to choose from, the 2024 Canberra Moon Festival is a delicious opportunity to treat your tasted buds to a variety of dishes from different countries.
From homemade dumplings to Chinese grilled skewers, Korean noodles, and more, foodies will delight in the gourmet options. A must-try? A traditional mooncake should be at the top of your bucket list.
Take part in some family-friendly interactive activities
Perfect for the whole family, this three-day event has something for everyone. From cultural performances to cooking shows, live DJ sets, and more, the 2024 Canberra Moon Festival will also have six immersive cultural activities and games for all ages to participate in.
With previous years seeing everything from a Korean arrow throwing game to arts and crafts activities for the kids, it’s a great opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural legacies from various countries and have some fun in the process. With more information to come, you can stay up-to-date with the event here.
Enjoy the cultural showcase
The theme of the Canberra Moon Festival is ‘One Community, One World, One Big Family’, so it’s no surprise that the event is all about showcasing the amazing multicultural community we have in the nation’s capital.
Along with live demonstrations, City Walk will once again be transformed into a stunning lantern market complete with a Giant LED Moon and Rabbit installations (which are perfect for an Insta moment), and a wishing tree. But there’s so much more.
With some new installations and highlights promised by the organisers, mark this event in your calendar, and get ready to bring your friends, family, and festive spirit – because it’s going to be big.
