What to see in cinemas Boxing Day and New Year’s Day 2025

Two of the most auspicious cinematic dates on the calendar, free air conditioning and popcorn – what’s not to love?

There’s nothing better than relaxing in the dark, snack-filled cinema on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Here are our suggestions of what to see – from feel-good kids movies to action-packed adventures, there’s something for everyone.

Mufasa: The Lion King (now in cinemas)

Directed by Barry Jenkins, fans of the Disney classic should put seeing this movie at the top of their bucket list.

A follow-up to the 2019 live-action blockbuster, Mufasa explores the origin of the great lion king himself. Perfect for all ages, it’s the hit of nostalgia you didn’t know you needed.

Kraven The Hunter (now in cinemas)

Love an action movie? Kraven The Hunter will tick all of your boxes – especially if you’re a fan of the Marvel cinematic universe.

An action comedy-drama packed origin story of how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be, head along to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crowe in their villain era.

Better Man (in cinemas Boxing Day)

From the great mind behind The Greatest Showman comes a not-to-be-missed movie about the meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and remarkable resurgence of British superstar Robbie Williams.

Told from Williams’ perspective, it charts his life from childhood to his achievements as a record-breaking solo artist. Williams’ plays himself but there’s a twist – he portrays himself as a chimpanzee. You’ll have to watch it to see why.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (in cinemas Boxing Day)

Keanu Reeves, Jim Carrey, and Idirs Elba are just some of the blockbuster names in this movie, so you know it’s going to be good.

Use the kids as an excuse to grab some tickets and watch Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite to battle Shadow, a mysterious new enemy.

A Real Pain (in cinemas Boxing Day)

Directed by and starring Jesse Eisenberg, this comedy-drama will be the perfect Boxing Day escape.

Following cousins David and Benji as they take a tour through Poland to honour their grandmother, it promises to be full of laugh-out-loud moments.

Paddington in Peru (in cinemas New Year’s Day)

Looking for a feel-good family movie? We’ll just leave this one here, because who doesn’t love Paddington Bear?

Nosferatu (in cinemas New Year’s Day)

You might want to leave the kids at home for this one.

Taking a fresh spin on the timeless story of Dracula, this horror movie stars Bill Skarsgård, Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, Emma Corrin, Nicholas Hoult, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Get ready for some chills and thrills.

And as a little bonus….

Squid Games Season 2

Okay, this one won’t be in cinemas, but we had to mention season two of Squid Games. After waiting years to see what’s going to happen next to Seong Gi-hun, we’ll be bingeing this sequel up to the worldwide hit.
