Five things to do this week in Canberra

Posted on

Happy Monday, Canberra.

With the rain easing and restrictions easing around the city, it’s the perfect time to plan a week full of relaxation, culture and (dare we say it?) a little Christmas cheer.

Santa has arrived at Canberra Centre

That’s right—the big man in red has landed at Canberra Centre and Santa Photo sessions are now open!

With COVID-safety front of mind, the crew at Canberra Centre have designed a safe and fun experience for kids big and small, including Sensitive Santa photo sessions.

Experience Austen at The REP’s Sense and Sensibility

The Canberra REP presents a playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters, shortly after their father’s sudden death.

Set in gossipy 18-century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humour, emotional depth and bold theatricality. When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?

ReNew yourself in Glebe Park

Don’t procrastinate: meditate. Stretch, de-stress and meditate for free on Tuesday mornings from 7.30 am in November and December with Mindful Movement classes in Glebe Park.

Mindful movement sessions will begin with gentle mindful movement including yoga and walking meditation to nourish and care for your body and settle your mind. The second half of the class will be guided mindfulness meditation.

Over the eight weeks, participants will move through a range of mindfulness meditation practices to help you make a fresh start and move into your day from a place of greater awareness, clarity and centredness.

Everyone is welcome and no prior meditation or yoga experience is necessary to join the classes.

Catch an international flick at the British Film Festival

Bringing you the cream of cinema from the British Isles, the annual British Film Festival is brimming over with session times at NewActon’s Palace Electric until 3 December.

With films featuring the likes of Judy Dench, Clare Foy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jamie Dornan, Helen Mirren and Michael Caine (to name just a few), did someone say ‘the perfect way to spend a rainy weekend’?

Be Nurtured at DESIGN Canberra presents Nurture

Earlier this year, the dedicated team behind Canberra’s premier arts festival, DESIGN Canberra, made a heartbreaking decision to cancel their 2021 festival due to COVID-related concerns.

In its place, however, has sprung a new offering—Nurture—a month-long program of virtual and small-group events and workshops designed to support wellbeing and creativity after a difficult 24 months for Canberra.

Designed to give Canberra a COVID-safe dose of the arts, Nurture will use art, design, creativity and mindfulness to instil a sense of calm creativity in the Canberran community as well as platforming and supporting DESIGN Canberra’s artist and maker community until 28 November.
