World Environmental Day: #BEATAIRPOLLUTION

Posted on

Did you know that 92 per cent of people worldwide do not breathe clean air and by 2030, ground-level ozone pollution is expected to reduce staple crop yields by 26 per cent?

Air pollution may seem complex, but we can all do our own part to reduce it. Understanding the different types of pollution, and how it affects our health and environment, is the best way to help us take steps towards improving the air around us.

Taking place on Wednesday 5 June, World Environmental Day is when you can learn more about the air pollution around you, and how you can #BEATAIRPOLLUTION. Across the world, over 100 countries will celebrate, take action and raise awareness for World Environmental Day.

This Wednesday, the ACT Government is hosting a pop-up event on City Walk. The events aims to get Canberrans inspired to improve our air quality, recycle, reduce waste, use public transport and get involved in protecting our unique city and its air.

This year the government is joining forces with some great local organisations such as the Canberra Environment Centre, SEE-Change and the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust and activities on the day include hands-on activities like making your own beeswax wraps, compost bins and worms farms.

Take the challenge to swap single-use plastics for reusable alternatives and get tips from experts on how to use your wood heater correctly.

You can experience what it’s like to camp in one of our many great parks and reserves and also learn how to minimise household pollution by halving your household waste.

To help the environment on the day, you can join the lunchtime litter clean up gang or join a volunteer park care group.

Together we can #BEATAIRPOLLUTION.
