You’d be barking mad to miss this: Domestic Animal Services is hosting an open day

Posted on

We have some paw-some news – Domestic Animal Services is hosting its first open day since 2018.

Taking place this Saturday (21 October) there will be a barbeque, coffee, and stalls where you can buy both animal and human treats! The open day is a family friendly event, so of course there will be face painting.

Count me in!

This is a great opportunity to meet their experienced and dedicated staff and volunteers, where you can ask questions and advice about your own dog but also…dogs will be up for adoption! Did you know that 98% of impounded dogs get adopted from the ACT? As an animal lover, I know I won’t be able to resist being included in that statistic.

There are going to be 45 dogs up for adoption, 32 adult dogs and 13 puppies – including a few ‘Golden Oldies’. Most of the adult dogs range from one to three years old, and yes, those adorable puppies in the photos are going to be available for adoption – at eight weeks old!

According to Assistant Director at Domestic Animal Services Jackie Gardner, there will be plenty of people on the day to answer any paw-sible questions you may have.

“Staff and volunteers are going to be spread-out to assist throughout the day, including qualified behavioural trainers, as well as having eight stakeholders, RSPCA, ACT foster and rescue, and Canberra Lost Pet Data Base just to name a few.” she says.

Another awesome opportunity on the day is to see the Animal Recovery Disease and Control Centre ‘ARK’, this device is designed to support animals and pets in emergency situations such as a bushfire.

Jackie calls it is a “one stop shop if there was an emergency such as a bush fire, we can put it on a back of a car, as it is a massive trailer and it has everything we need to facilitate and help animals in need and take it to an emergency centre.”

Want your own fur-ever friend? If you want to know more information about the dogs that are up for adoption before Saturday visit their website, to find out if any will be suitable for your home.

Friends fur-ever.

However, dogs need to go to forever homes, and it is important if you do decide to adopt this weekend, that the decision is made carefully. Remember, these dogs need  a forever home, not a holiday home.

It’s worth noting that as  this event does include rescue dogs, you cannot bring your own dog, for their own safety and for the safety of other dogs at the event.
