A Deadset peek at a hot new bar

Posted on

It’s been the stuff of rumours – whispers that (yet another) hotspot was set to open in the ridiculously hip NewActon Precinct. And today, at noon, all was revealed.

Nishi’s latest space, Deadset, is giving Canberrans a sneak peek of what’s in store all weekend – you can pop along and enjoy coffee, regional wine, spirits, and a couple of gigs. It will then shut its doors again until next Friday 29 November, when it opens ‘for reals’.

This has been a year of impressive openings, new hotspots and amazing fitouts…but believe me when I say, Canberra has never seen anything like this. Deadset is a bar; a lounge room; a library stocked with a growing collection of artisan books; and a secret garden – and the design is simply breathtaking.

Original art, raw concrete and timber, custom-made furniture from Australian artists sits alongside restored 20th century pieces and imported treasures from India. Holes drilled in the thick concrete ceiling give a view up into the greenery of the atrium and the soaring exterior walls of Nishi. A mix of old and new combine effortlessly to create a space that has something for everyone.

“Deadset is a place for people to converge”, says Nectar Efkarpidis, Hotel Hotel founder. We want it to be open to everyone – whether that’s a local having a drink at the bar, a uni student scamming free wifi from the lounge or reading the books in the library, or an art lover coming to look at the works”.

It’s all part of the grand plan to give Canberrans more sets from which to perform, and to enrich Canberra’s artistic culture.

“We have some incredible talent in Canberra”, says Efkarpidis. “They deserve more places to showcase this talent; and more places where homegrown, national and international talent can be enjoyed by locals.”

And that’s kicking off this weekend, with a free tribute concert to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of internationally acclaimed vocal jazz outfit, The Idea of North, at 11:15am on Sunday 24 November. You’ll be able to enjoy some simple bar snacks and an impressive array of drinks while listening to some award-winning music.
