Where to find the best bánh mì in Canberra, as voted by you

Posted on

Following the success of the last time we asked our Facebook audience for recommendations, we decided to do it again – and this time, we wanted to know where your favourite bánh mì is.

Once again, you didn’t disappoint. Recommendations flowed thick and fast for spots on all sides of Canberra. And while it’s taken us a few weeks to pull it together, as the cold weather starts to set in, it feels like the perfect time to share where to get a freshly made bánh mì (which many on the HerCanberra team think is one of the best comfort meals).

So, as chosen by our beloved audience, we give you the list of our reader’s favourite places in Canberra for the best bánh mì. You’re welcome.

What The Pho (Belconnen)

Recently opening in the Capital Food Market in Belconnen, What The Pho is known for it’s authentic taste of Vietnamese street food – including their bánh mì rolls.

As well as keeping things traditional, you can also find some unique bánh mì rolls on the menu, like the Hoi An Roast Pork Bánh Mì and an Omelet Bánh Mì.

You can find their other location at the Australian National University.

Open Wednesday to Thursday 9 am – 6 pm and Friday to Sunday, 9 am – 8 pm | Shop T06/15 Market Street, Belconnen |  whatthepho.com.au

Asian Delights Bakery (Charnwood)

Hidden in the suburbs, Asian Delights Bakery in Charnwood got a lot of mentions on our call out post.

Baking their bánh mì to order, choose what kind of roll you’d like (from traditional pork to tofu) and pick whatever fillings tickle your tastebuds.

Open Monday 7:30 am – 6 pm, Tuesday to Friday 7:30 am – 6:30 pm, Saturday 7:30 am – 5 pm and Sunday 8 am – 4 pm | 5 Charnwood Place, Charnwood

Saigon Fresh (Gungahlin)

Known for it’s famous Siagon Roll, this little family-owned Vietnamese street food spot in Gungahlin is making our mouths water.

From a pork cracking roll to a vegetarian roll (that doesn’t have tofu), we can almost imagine the crunch of biting into the crunchy bread.

Open Monday to Sunday, 10 am – 4 pm |  Gungahlin Village Coles, Hibberson Street, Gungahlin | facebook.com/saigonfreshcanberra

Ms Ba Cô (Majura, Civic and Tuggeranong)

Ms Ba Cô has garnered a cult following for its authentic bánh mì since it first opened in Majura Park   and with three locations around Canberra, long queues at lunchtime are a common sight  – with members of the HerCanberra team included in the lines.

Owned by Richard and Elsa, who migrated from Vietnam in 1980, it’s hard to go past the fresh bánh mì here, of which hundreds are prepared each day in quick succession and stuffed to overflowing with fresh greenery, vegetables, spicy tofu, pork belly or lemongrass chicken.

Check locations for opening hours | 4&6/108 Bunda Street City, Shop 39/18-26 Spitfire Avenue Majura Park and Shop 129 Anketell Street &, Reed Street North Greenway | facebook.com/msbacostreetfood

Miss Van’s (Civic)

Given his string of successes with Lazy Su, Baby Su and Miss Van’s Street Food, it’s no surprise that the bánh mì at Andrew Duong’s Miss Van’s in the city is exemplary.

A personal favourite of the HerCanberra team (we’ve been known for doing a lunchtime bánh mì run), Andrew’s modernised version of this traditional dish has cha lua, roasted pork, chicken parfait, pickles and herbs for the carnivores and lemongrass and garlic tofu, pickles and herbs for the plant-based eaters. Is it 12 pm yet?

BanMe (Braddon)

A little hole-on-the-wall hidden in the tiny strip behind Waves carwash on Lonsdale Street – and recently also opened in Gungahlin – we’re so happy to see that BanMe was nominated – because we can confirm that it’s delicious.

Established Tommy Nguyen and his partner Kathy Phan in late 2023, it’s still something of a new kid on the block but it has a truly superior line of bánh mì, including the signature crackling pork, charcoal chicken, charcoal beef, meatball, crispy tofu and a new vegetarian option heavy on smashed avo. Delish.

Open Monday to Sunday, 10 am – 9 pm | 15 Lonsdale Street, Braddon and 14/43 Hibberson St, Gungahlin | banme.com.au

Little Phat Rolls (Braddon)

This food truck in Waves carwash on Lonsdale Street serves up hot and crispy bánh mì for when you need something quick and fresh.

Steadily building a cult following since it first opened, you need to try one for yourself to see what the hype is about.

Open Tuesday to Friday, 10 am – 3 pm, and Saturday to Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm. Open for dinner Thursday 5 pm – 8:30 pm and Friday 5:30 pm – 10 pm | 17 Lonsdale Street, Braddon | facebook.com/littlephatroll

Catbird (Parkes)

The cuisine at Catbird might be rooted in the Southern California food ethos, but their bánh mì is not to be scoffed at.

Made with vegan pork belly, mushroom pate and vegan butter, even carnivores will love this fully loaded, fresh bánh mì…

VINAUS Takeaway and Café (Lyneham)

Located in at the Lyneham shops VINAUS might just look like your classic ‘grab and go’ café for burgers and hot snacks, but with an overflowing number of bánh mì available, it’s so much more.

It looks like we might have to make a trip to Lyneham to see what the fuss is about, because we’re very intrigued.

Open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 8 pm and Saturday 9 am – 4 pm | Shop 3/84 Wattle Street, Lyneham

29 Café & Eatery (Curtin)

We don’t know a lot about 29 Café & Eatery, but we do know this: they were known as Gourmet Delights and recently changed names.

Still operating under the same owners, they not only serve bánh mì but also pho, coffee and whatever else their taste buds crave. And with several shout outs on our Facebook post, it must be good.

Open Monday to Sunday, 6:30 am – 4 pm and 5 pm – 9 pm | 3-5/1 Curtin Place, Curtin | facebook.com/p/29-Cafe-Eatery

Noi Noi (Kingston,Casey and Gungahlin)

Another eatery with a cult following, while Kingston is without a doubt the most well known, it’s worth noting that Noi Noi actually has three locations in Canberra: Kingston, Casey and Gungahlin.

Made fresh daily, all of their bánh mì’s are also available for online delivery, you don’t even need to leave your house to get your mouth around one of these.

Check venue for opening hours | Shop 5/34 Eyre Street Kingston, 15 Kingsland Parade Casey and Gungahlin Place, Gungahlin | facebook.com/noinoikingston

Saigon Foodies (Kingston)

Located on Giles Street next to Andrew Arcade, Saigon Foodies is a suburban gem.

Serving authentic Vietnamese food, the menu is small but it’s mighty – and sometimes simple is best.

Open Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 am – 2 pm and Saturday 10 am – 4 pm | 1/42 Giles Street, Kingston | facebook.com/Saigon-Foodies

Em Mai (Fyshwick)

Only open Thursday to Sunday, making a stop at the Fyshwick Markets for some quick and easy Vietnamese takeaway sounds like the perfect lazy-day idea.

What sounds better than a crispy bánh mì while exploring the markets?

Open Thursday to Sunday, 9 am – 5 pm | Niche Market, Shop 16/36 Mildura Street, Fyshwick

Vietnamese Bakery & Café (Fyshwick)

All made fresh to order, this little café was obviously nominated several times for a reason.

And while we haven’t tried the bánh mì from here, if you like it, we know it must be good.

Open Monday to Friday, 6 am – 3:30 pm and Saturday, 7 am – 2:30 pm | 19 Isa Street, Fyshwick | facebook.com/vietnamesebakeryfyshwick

B Squared Espresso (Brindabella)

With more bánh mì then you can poke a stick at, B Squared Espresso in Brindabella is worth a trip during the work week (so you tell say).

And honestly, they had us drooling at their cracking pork bánh mì…

Open Monday to Friday, 7 am – 2:45 pm |  1/17 Brindabella Circuit, Pialligo | bsquared-espresso.square.site

Wanniassa Vietnamese Bakery (Wanniassa)

If the locals love it, you know it’s good.

A little-hole-in-the-wall at Wanniassa shops, if you live in the south, don’t miss out on a bánh mì’ from here.

Open Monday to Saturday, 7 am – 5 pm and Sunday 7 am – 4 pm | 21 Sangster Place, Wanniassa

O Bach (Tuggeranong)

Located across the road from Bunnings, O Bach is still reasonably new but southsiders already seem to love it.

Serving up fried egg, tofu, pork, lemon grass chicken and more, grab yourself one and go.

Open Monday to Friday, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm and 5 pm – 8:30 pm, and Saturday to Sunday 10:30 am – 3:30 pm | Unit 354/325 Anketell Street, Greenway

Saigon Hot Bake (Queanbeyan)

Last but not least, here’s another votes for some of the best Saigon rolls in Canberra – or at least Canberra adjacent.

Promising a authentic taste of Vietnam, did someone say ‘road trip’?

Open Monday to Saturday, 8 am – 4 pm |  8/71 Monaro Street, Queanbeyan
