Cafe Momo bringing 30 years of Belconnen popularity to Braddon

Posted on

In the world of hospitality, ten years of running a bustling café is a long time.

For Maulik Patel, the owner of Café Momo, it is an enormous point of pride that his humble Bruce café has been pumping out food to happy customers for 30 years.

After serving its first meal in 1996 in the slightly out-of-the-way location of Fern Hill Park in Bruce, Café Momo is taking the leap into Braddon.

30 years strong, the Bruce Cafe Momo

Located off Cooyong Street in the leafy courtyard of Founder’s Lane, this sweet little space will be an absolutely godsend for apartment dwellers in Braddon who want to sit under the elm and oak trees with an Ona coffee and one of Café Momo’s popular burgers.

The new café will trade from 6.30 am until 9 pm, serving everything from light breakfasts and coffee through to lunches, salads, burgers, pizzas and a range of pasta and other dinner options.

Behind the food is executive chef Harvinder Singh, who joined Cafe Momo over a year ago and has since helped refresh the menu. With more than 12 years’ experience, he has worked with the team to shift the focus toward modern Australian food, made from scratch and using Cafe Momo’s own recipes rather than relying on ready-made products.

That philosophy is personal. Maulik says the benchmark for the food from Café Momo is simple: if he would not be confident serving it to his own children, it should not be served to customers.

“We focus on quality food,” he says. “The main thing is quality. If I am not confident to serve my daughter and son, then how can I serve the same thing to the customer? And if my daughter (aged 7) asks for pancakes, we make them from scratch.”

Good Ona coffee has always been part of the appeal, with the team putting experienced baristas behind the machine and focusing on the kind of reliable, everyday coffee that has helped build Cafe Momo’s following over the years.

Plus a wide range of meals (seriously, the menu is huge) and hearty portions. Cafe Momo is also happy to cater for work or private events.

Maulik is excited to earn a new clientele in the city. While the Bruce cafe has long served a mix of office workers during the week and locals on weekends, the Braddon location will tap into a different rhythm – apartment residents, city workers, passers-by and anyone looking for an all-day place to eat in a quieter pocket of the suburb. Under those beautiful trees.

Café Momo Braddon is opening on Friday 28 August and will celebrate by offering free coffees and hot drinks all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
