Chill out your tastebuds: our top picks of summer treats

Posted on

While the days are long and hot, there’s nothing better than indulging in cold and icy treats.

And Canberra has a lot to choose from. We don’t just mean ice cream, of course, we mean a variety of specialty desserts and drinks which we have taken the liberty of compiling in a list for your enjoyment.

Chef Hem’s Lemon Sorbet

Chef Hem Magar is producing some of the best pizza in the world from his tiny bolthole caravan by The Dock in Kingston. But that’s not why we are here. Once you have devoured his molten cheesy creations you simply MUST order a lemon. Then you will find yourself temporarily transported from the shores of Lake Burley Griffin to Lake Como* as Hem hands you a whole frozen citrus wrapped in a serviette, the insides of which have been carefully scraped out and replaced with lemon sorbet.

The entire experience is so deliciously decadent, so aesthetically pleasing and so chillingly tart-yet-sweet, that you will vow to come back for your next lemon wearing your hair tied back in an Emilio Pucci scarf with a pair of dark glasses just like Sophia Lauren in the arthouse movie It Started in Naples.**

*Excuse us our dramatic flair in painting this scenic picture for you.

Moo Moo’s Matcha Frozen Yogurt

At the risk of sounding like addicts, we have made our feelings about matcha quite clear. We are, in fact, addicted. So the thought of having our favourite flavour, churned into delicious frozen yoghurt (for that little hit of tang) and swirled into a cup at Moo Moo Frozen Yogurt in Braddon is almost too much for us to cope with. It truly is a subtle, smooth, creamy, refreshing experience which can and should be enjoyed at any time of night or day.

The best bit? While so many foods are a no-go zone for our beloved Online Editor and resident coeliac Erin Cross, this is gluten-free, and also relatively low in sugar. So actually, it’s broccoli. Only much, much better.

Mezcals’ Frozen Margaritas

Is there anything better than a frosted glass on a balmy evening? Mezcals in the city serve up a range of cold cocktails, but the frozen margaritas are an obvious choice to cool down on a hot day.

We were particularly taken by the Watermelon Mint and the Coconut Lychee offerings, but if you’re after an alcohol-free option their Horchata is a game changer. Combo’d with a plate of nachos and some good friends, and there’s no way you’ll be worrying about the weather – margs solve all.

When blended, that deep purple açaí berry transforms into a velvety smooth sorbet-like base that’s both rich and refreshing. And, Acai Bunny knows how to get it right. Think of an indulgent soft-serve açai cup with your choice of generous toppings. They recently added the viral Dubai chocolate-covered strawberry cups to their list of offerings and honestly, our mouths are watering just thinking about it.

This decadent combination of berries is oozing at the seams with a variety of toppings such as Nutella, Biscoff spread and Pistachio, and it doesn’t stop at the sauce as you can spread toppings such as boba pearls, muesli and a variety of fresh fruit.
