Eat Gungahlin: some of our fave international flavours

Posted on

A bustling town centre beloved by families, Gungahlin has fast become one of Canberra’s most dynamic and diverse regions.

And as the area continues to grow, so too does its food scene – reflecting the rich mix of cultures that call it home. From long-standing favourites to exciting new openings, it’s packed with some of the best places to eat north of the city. Which begs the question: is Gungahlin Canberra’s next multicultural foodie hotspot?

From fresh and flavoursome Greek to a little slice of Paris, these eight delicious spots will take your tastebuds on a trip around the world – no passport required.

Officially opening on Thursday 14 May, Zeus Street Greek is the newest addition to the area. Serving bold and fresh Greek food that’s as healthy as it is delicious, here Gungahlinites will be able to order flame-grilled pitas, nourishing bowls, fresh salads, pilaf rice, and home-made dips.

The word on the street is that on opening day, they’ll be offering $5 pitas all day from 10 am, with your choice of Tzimmy chicken, Tzimmy lamb, or falafel as the filling.

It might not be quite the same as eating your way through the Greek islands, but it’s a close second.

Mr Pasta

Craving Italian without the price tag? Mr Pasta is the place to go. A family favourite in Marketplace Gungahlin, the menu at this pasta bar is simple but extremely satisfying. Using freshly made pasta, all you need to do is choose which you would like as your base (rigatoni, macaroni, spaghetti, gemelli, or gluten-free penne), choose your sauce and add any extras.

And because Italian food is all about sharing, they also have pizza, garlic bread, chips and tiramisu so you can easily feed the whole family. The best part? It’s fast, filling and comforting on a cold day.

Hing Win Wonton and Claypot Rice

For those looking for something to warm themselves from the inside out this winter, authentic Cantonese cuisine can be found at Hing Win Wonton and Claypot Rice. Located in the heart of Gungahlin, this restaurant specialises in house-made prawn wontons – and who can resist the sound of that on a cold day?

Also serving crispy crust claypot rice, sizzling grill steak, and other beloved Hong Kong comfort dishes, they’re open for both lunch and dinner.

Make sure to take the time to try this recent new addition.

Ask any Gungahlin local where to eat and this schiacciata sandwich bar is sure to come up. Located on the edge of Yerrabi Pond, here you can sink your teeth into fresh-out-of-the-oven bread (schiacciata and panini) loaded with freshly shaved cured meats and cheeses. And yes, you will need to queue.

If Italian sandwiches aren’t your thing, they also serve pizza after 5 pm. And if you’re looking for something sweet, don’t worry – they have macarons, gluten-free chocolate brownies, caramel walnut tarts, lemon tarts, carrot cake, and Ferrero Rocher cake.

Canberra Momo House

Beginning life as a food truck, Canberra Momo House became so popular that it opened a bricks and mortar location in Gungahlin Place, taking visitors straight to the foothills of the Himalayas via flavours of Nepal.

While it’s known for its Momos (traditional Nepalese dumplings), they also serve an array of authentic dishes, snacks and takeaways that will cater for vegetarians and meat-lovers alike.

Do breakfast, lunch and dessert the French way at one of Canberra’s best patisseries. A little slice of Paris hidden within Gungahlin, they’re open from 8 am daily to serve Italian-style coffee and European pastries – from chocolate croissants to apricot Danishes.

You can also grab a cute little table and indulge in a superior Croque Monsieur for something a little more hearty.
