First Look: Espresso Room Tuggeranong

Posted on

It’s a fact of life in Canberra that as cooler weather descends, our dependency on our barista increases.

They’re the ones who greet us with a smile and a warming cup of our favourite blend even when the weather is miserable, providing that kick we need to get going in the morning or make it through that meeting that could have totally been an email. And luckily for Tuggeranongites, this winter will be that much more bearable thanks to a newly renovated Espresso Room.

More than twice the size of the original café in Tuggeranong Hyperdome, Espresso Room patrons now have more space than ever to grab a takeaway brew or sip a quiet latte over the paper.

“We weren’t expecting to get the crowds we have,” says Eve Moeller, deputy manager at Espresso Room. “The first day [we opened] I think I stood on the till from 7 am until 2 pm. I didn’t move. I didn’t want to move, I was having such a ball!”

It’s not hard to see why either. In addition to the chic décor—think minimal black and wood furnishings with fresh green hanging plants and plenty of bright light—this is a team that’s serious about their coffee.

“We work closely with ONA Coffee—we use Black Betty for our house blend and we go rotate through single origin espresso every few weeks,” explains Eve.

“It’s always exciting getting new flavours and we often get customers coming in just to try the espresso. They love the attention and detail we put into them.”

It’s not just the quality of the coffee that attracts customers either. Eve says that due to the public service buildings around the Hyperdome, Espresso Room is perfectly positioned for catch-ups over lunch as well as healthy breaks away from the desk.

“It’s a really great central meeting place for them.”

Speaking of lunch, on the current menu is a selection of freshly made grab-and-go options, but Eve explains that they hope to expand this in the near future.

“At the moment we have sandwiches, croissants and breakfast foods like yoghurt and banana bread and cakes, but we’re working on getting some more lunch options in like salads. People are requesting more food and we have the space for it now.”

That room to move seems to be one of the highlights of Espresso Room’s move. Eve explains that while they only moved a grand total of about 10 metres across the walkway to their new space, the change has been significant for both the staff and the customers.

“In our old shop we were packed every day—it was a bit more of a hole in the wall and it was quite dark. It’s just so exciting to have this beautiful modern store.”
