Spring has sprung, Canberra. But tulips aren’t the only new things bringing us joy this…
Lonsdale Street. Kingston Foreshore. Tuggeranong?
If you think ‘coffee hot spots’ you’d be forgiven if Canberra’s southernmost suburbs don’t spring immediately to mind. But Tuggeranongians (Tuggeranongites?) are finally getting the coffee they deserve, with the launch of one of the area’s chicest cafés.
Foundry Coffee Co. opened earlier this week with what could only be classified as a bang—inquisitive office workers packing out the cafe as they were introduced to their new local.
A compact space that focuses on excellent coffee, Foundry Coffee Co.’s interior pays homage to its name (meaning a factory that produces metal castings). Metal fittings throughout giving the interiors an intimate, moody feel and opposite the counter, a neon light installation makes an eye-catching background for any Insta snaps.
Behind a cabinet packed with treats like Nutella doughnuts and Cookies and Cream Cupcakes, baristas pour shot after shot of caffeinated goodness. While fast, friendly service is the café’s main focus, there will also a small takeaway menu on offer after the business settles in.
And with two huge new public service buildings right around the corner, it shouldn’t take long. In fact, Manager Joseph Wagland explains that Foundry Coffee Co. was created in response to demand by locals.
“We’ve noticed a big shift in Tuggeranong in recent years; an influx of local workers in nearby offices as well as new residents to apartments in the area, but the amenity did not yet meet this growth.”
Joseph points to Canberra’s coffee pedigree, saying that there’s no excuse for any part of the city to miss out on café culture.
“Canberrans are no longer willing to settle for second best when it comes to coffee and service, and nor should they,” he says, promising that Foundry Coffee Co. will fill that latte-sized hole in Tuggeranong’s heart.
Did someone say free coffee?
To sweeten (or should we say caffeinate?) the deal for new customers, Foundry Coffee Co. will be pouring free coffees (yes, free) during their ‘Hour of Power’ each morning from 9.30 am – 10.30 am until Friday 16 February*.
If that wasn’t enough, purchase four coffees and your fifth is free (that’s a happy Friday for the one-a-day drinkers) and if you purchase a KeepCup in store, your first coffee is free.
For Joseph, however, the bottom line is all about creating a welcoming atmosphere where people will want to take a break and catch up with friends.
“Expect passionate baristas who know you by name, and have your order down pat before too long.”
Sounds like the perfect weekday local.
