Al Fresco: Eight ideas for outdoor dining in Canberra

Posted on

Summer is here, (most) venues have reopened after the holiday period and we are…still cautious.

With rising COVID cases here and around Australia, it’s understandable. However, for those wanting to support our vibrant hospitality scene during these tough times and stay outside, here are some of our favourite al fresco dining spots across the city.

Tilley’s Devine Café (Lyneham)

Northside icon Tilley’s hasn’t changed a lot since opening in 1984—and luckily that includes the expansive outdoor seating area.

Tilley’s also wins points for having plenty of undercover seating—perfect for this drippy La Niña summer.

Yaki Boi (Braddon)

Did someone say rooftop terrace? Braddon’s Yaki Boi (feature image) has one of the best views of Lonsdale Street (and the whole of the city) with plenty of space to spread out.

Bittersweet (Kingston)

Pop over to sunny Green Square in Kingston for brunch, lunch or coffee at Bittersweet.

If there isn’t a table free, there are plenty of benches and grassy areas to picnic on.

The Alby (Woden)

Woden’s newest local, The Alby, has plenty of outdoor seating that’s usually shaded and breezy. Don’t miss the basement bowling alleys!

Tipsy Bull (Braddon)

Some venues have beer gardens, but we prefer to think of Tipsy Bull‘s as a G&T garden as an homage to their epic deconstructed G&T boards.

Phat Panda (Tuggeranong)

Purveyor of street food deliciousness Phat Panda sits adjacent to an airy outdoor dining area in South.Point Tuggeranong, with outdoor seating aplenty.

A Bite To Eat (Chifley)

Hidden from view, one of the cutest outdoor seating areas in the south can be found at Chifley’s A Bite To Eat. Just head through the restaurant and out the back.

Capital Brewing Co (Fyshwick)

A brew pub with a massive outdoor beer garden AND a Brodburger van? Yes please.

No tables to be had? Head upstream (literally) to one of the grassy spots next to the manmade creek that winds through the shady Dairy Road Precinct.
