First Look: Rakkas – Turkish fine dining at the Foreshore
Posted on
The Kingston Foreshore’s newest resident brings an elevated Turkish experience to Canberra’s Inner South – and we predict it will become a fast favourite.
The foodie community has been curious for some time about what would take over the spot vacated by Morks on the Kingston Foreshore. Now we can reveal it to be modern Turkish restaurant Rakkas.
With dark and moody interiors that invite diners to stay awhile, chef and owner Mert Toplu explains Rakkas will serve food from his home country with flair.
“We aim to offer modern Turkish flavours uniquely and distinctively, bringing a fresh perspective to Turkish cuisine in Canberra,” he explains.
“We have endeavoured to design a cosy and comfortable layout that allows for extended hours of leisurely lunches and dinners, with cultural elements infused throughout.”

Rakkas might be Mert’s first venue on the Kingston Foreshore but his culinary journey started decades ago, having worked in fine dining and five-star hotels across a 23-year career in Istanbul and Canberra.
“After completing the top culinary school in my home country of Turkey, I entered the industry at the age of 15, never having pursued anything else. Inspiration has been a constant companion throughout this journey.”
In 2020, Mert opened Thirty 4 Cafe Queanbeyan which, despite opening just prior to the first COVID lockdown, quickly became a community favourite.
“The locals quickly embraced and supported us, leading to us receiving the Local Business Award twice (for the most outstanding cafe in ACT) and one for the best breakfast restaurant from Rest Catering,” explains Mert.

Now, Mert has turned his attention to a venue that showcases his roots. With a diverse menu that fuses classic Turkish dishes and flavours with modern cooking techniques, Mert is excited to show Canberra a new side to this beloved cuisine.

The innovation doesn’t stop at the kitchen either, with a drinks menu of international flavours.
“Our wine menu features products from Turkey, Australia, and Europe. Additionally, our cocktail menu includes classic cocktails and seven signature cocktail creations that highlight famous Turkish ingredients – each cocktail is named after a region, and the ingredients used represent what that region is famous for.”
As for Mert’s favourite dish so far?
“When it comes to our food menu, every item holds a special place, however, I must highlight that our scallops and dips are particularly unique. Never done by anyone before.”
