Records, chai and a totally gluten-free menu: Five new things to discover in Old Kingston

Posted on

Old Kingston is experiencing quite the renaissance.

With a host of new offerings courtesy of the Eyre Street Market precinct, as well as a thriving restaurant and café scene and a host of new speciality stores, there’s never been a better time to revisit ‘Old Kingston’.

Want to stay for longer?

Walter & Whitley’s one, two and three-bedroom apartments offer a sanctuary on leafy Leichhardt Street, with the display suite now open for viewing seven days a week.

R.A.R.E Records

The perfect place to browse on a sunny afternoon, R.A.R.E Records is now open in the Cusack Centre on Eyre Street.

This sweet little store, which sells CDs as well as records, stands for Retro And Record Emporium and originally opened in Bungendore in 2015 before moving into Old Kingston in July of this year. Happy treasure hunting!

Kingston’s newest fashion boutique, Goldfinch the Label, actually started out in Pambula on the NSW South Coast, their boutique quickly amassing a fanbase dedicated to the keen eye of owner and designer Megan Luhrs.

Now, Canberrans can also browse Goldfinch’s curated collection of sustainable and ethical fashion pieces alongside Australian-made jewellery, accessories and body products in delightfully mid-century interiors on

Ambi’s Chai

This popular café has roots in Sydney, with its first Canberra outpost offering ‘authentic Afro-Punjabi chai’ in a deliciously diverse variety of ways (Spicy chocolate chai! Iced Chai!).

Located on the corner of Green Square, this ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ bolthole offers a whole new dimension to your summer drinks list as well as a small but delicious menu of roti.

Queenies has a new menu — and it’s completely gluten-free

The stately Queenies, with its high wood-beamed ceilings and velvet-drenched interiors on the corner of Giles and Kennedy Street needs no introduction — its art-deco metal and glass bar has been gracing Canberra’s Instagram feeds since 2020.

However, it kind of does, because as of June 2023, it’s been under new ownership. While not much has changed (yet) when it comes to Queenies’ signature old-fashioned vibes, their menu is now completely gluten-free (yes, really) while still keeping crowd favourites like the eggplant chips and Bangkok fried chicken.

Behind that starry bar, there’s a new cocktail menu on offer, featuring a mix of classic cocktails as well as low and no-alc beverages and even a range of vegan sour cocktails that use aquafaba in place of egg whites.
