It was a foggy and cold Tuesday night when we ventured in to Soju Girl…
Queen Elizabeth might have been biting her nails when the Spanish Armada appeared on the horizon in 1588.
But we think Canberrans will have the opposite reaction when The Boat House’s new outdoor bar, Armada Outdoor Bar, appears on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin.
Opening on Friday 9 October, Armada Outdoor Bar will take advantage of The Boat House’s prime position on the lake’s edge, with spectacular sunset views.
It’s no surprise that an outdoor bar has been in the works for some time, according to owner James Souter.
“The Boat House restaurant is the perfect place to come and enjoy a timeless premium dining experience, but we have been looking for options to provide a more casual slant for our guests to enjoy our lakeside location.”
“Whether an afternoon session, casual dinner, or late evening soirée Armada Outdoor Bar guests can now enjoy hospitality on the lakeside like never before.”
All this as you sip a local beverage or two—there are plenty of familiar names on the drinks list, including Lark Hill, Nick O’Leary, Nick Spencer and Mount Majura—or perhaps a cocktail, with a curated menu of classics with a twist. Think Tommy’s Negroni or a Sunset Spritz.
Naturally, The Boat House chefs won’t be serving up any old bar snacks, with an elevated menu of nibbles on offer, including steamed bao buns with ginger soy eggplant, pickled cucumber and kewpie, wagyu beer tartare with smoked yolk, horseradish and potato chips, and roasted pumpkin with spiced yoghurt, pickled onions and crispy chickpeas.
Even the humble fries are getting an upgrade, served with seaweed salt and yuzu mayonnaise. Freshly shucked Appellation oysters and king prawns will complete the summer vibes.
Dressed to impress, Armada will be styled by Canberra’s Show Pony Events, with festoon lights adding sparkle to the evenings.
The expansive grassed space lends itself perfectly to physical distancing measures, however, bookings remain essential to secure your place at what will be one of the hottest bars of summer.
But Armada won’t just be here for the summer. In fact, James hopes it continues well into 2021.
“The aim is to take it all the way through to autumn which is my favourite season,” he says. “Depending on the success of the bar as well as our plans we may well continue to offer special sessions in winter with fire pits and heating.”
As you may have guessed, Armada Outdoor Bar will be weather dependent.
