Gelato Messina Gelato Messina Gelato Messina!

Stop the presses ice-cream fiends. We’ve waited weeks to bring you the “scoop” on Gelato Messina moving to Canberra, and now we are serving it up.

Yes! Sydney’s freakishly addictive ice cream empire is finding a permanent home in the territory – taking over a spot on, where else, but Lonsdale Street, Braddon.

The new store will set up in late July at what used to be the Autolyse juice bar, right next to Elk and Pea.

It is going to be busy down that section of the street given Sydney’s Sonoma Bakery is also beavering away for a June/July opening in the old Autolyse flagship. Sydney represent!

Since opening in Darlinghurst in 2002, the obsessive Gelato Messina team have sought to set a new benchmark for gelato in Australia, serving up a diverse range of over 40 flavours at any one time and a select number of bespoke gelato cakes and single serve pieces.

Every day they churn out some crazy concoction such as the Zabaglione con Martini Rosso – marsala egg custard gelato with martini rosso-soaked lady finger biscuits. Don’t try and say it, just point at it.

That tradition of daily drawcard flavours will continue in Canberra where the concept for the store is very open-plan with lots of natural light.

A spokeswoman said “Like all of our other stores, our operations will be completely transparent.  Customers will be able to watch our chef churn the gelato through the ‘churners window’ – ready to get mounded in the cabinet for consumption.”

Why Canberra?

“We’ve really loved being a part of the Night Noodle Markets in Canberra and have developed a bit of a fan base down there.  Canberra has been developing a lot over the last few years, so we thought it was time to expand our footprint down there,” the spokeswoman said.

While we can’t guarantee we will be hanging out late at night in the icy month of July for a fix, we can only imagine in the warmer months the store’s opening hours of 12pm – 11pm, seven days a week, will make Lonsdale Street a whole lot cooler.
