Sometimes when you go out to eat, you just want the comfort of what you…
High tea is a revered and sumptuously decadent tradition in many of the world’s most luxurious hotels, including London’s Ritz and Langham hotels, the Plaza in New York, the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, Canada, and Hong Kong’s magnificent Peninsula Hotel where patrons have to wait in line for their three-tiered platters of scrumptious delights (Her Canberra’s very own Heather Wallace queued for up to one hour and a half when she visited Hong Kong earlier this year!)
Here in Canberra, the Hyatt has for many years been the only luxury hotel offering this quintessentially English experience. But now there’s another luxury hotel in town where high tea is sure to become a favourite tradition – the Burbury Hotel in Barton.
The Burbury Hotel, a contemporary, multi award-winning 4.5 star hotel that echoes the prestige of Barton and the Parliamentary Triangle, recently launched its exclusive high tea…but you get much more than a three-tiered platter of dainty delights here. You also get the views. High tea takes place on the Burbury’s sunlit rooftop terrace which offers spectacular views overlooking Lake Burley Griffin, Black Mountain, leafy Barton and surrounds, and Canberra’s iconic buildings.

“The Burbury Terrace is such a unique space, perched on the rooftop of the Burbury Hotel with sweeping views of Canberra,” says Martina Males, Group Marketing Manager for the Doma Group which owns the Burbury Hotel. “It is unlike any other function space on offer in Canberra. In the past, the Terrace has often been reserved for higher-end private functions but we wanted to share this space for regular use – hence the concept for high tea.”
The views from the Burbury’s rooftop terrace provide a spectacular backdrop indeed to a high tea experience that exudes sophistication and elegance, from the fragrant cups of TWG luxury teas and glasses of sparkling GH Mumm Champagne (the Burbury has partnered with the GH Mumm Champagne brand which is synonymous with upmarket events), to the stunning black chandeliers and exquisite floral table arrangements.

And the food itself is an absolute treat! When my friend and I visited, we feasted on smoked salmon sliders, cucumber and cream cheese finger sandwiches, and warm baked scones which we dolloped with generous amounts of whipped cream and a delectably sweet blueberry, strawberry and pear jam combination.

As for the sweet treats, we happily indulged in a mouth-watering assortment of miniature pastries including blueberry friand, caramelised lemon tart, profiteroles stuffed with white chocolate mousse and topped with chocolate bits, and a bitter chocolate tart topped with salted caramel popcorn.
“All of our food is handmade,” Martina says, “and meticulously crafted by our French award-winning Executive Chef, Fabien Wagnon, who spends time each year in various patisseries in Southern France perfecting his skills set.”

The Burbury is certainly a very welcome addition to Canberra’s growing high tea scene.
“We believe that we provide the very best location with unmatched views and a food offering that is memorable,” Martina says. “For a special event whether it be an anniversary, announcement or birthday, the Burbury Hotel high tea is the perfect way of sharing a special moment with loved ones and friends.”
