Do you have a family recipe so prized that you’d love to tell the world (well, Canberra) all about it? This may be your chance.
My nana was amazing baker. Her scones were a thing of beauty (which I still haven’t managed to perfect) and her trifle made with homemade sponge cake was the highlight of my Christmas every year. It was her who made me equate food with love, and instilled in me a lifelong love of cooking.
And I know I’m not alone. In cultures the world over, recipes are passed down through the generations in a special kind of culinary history—usually they stay within the family, but some are just so good they deserve a bigger audience.
That’s where we come in. We’ve teamed up with Alpha Fresh, the ACT’s leading omni-food supplier, to unearth the best recipes from families around Canberra and bring them to you in a heartwarming video series.

But it’s not just grandmothers we’re keen to hear from. We want to learn from amazing cooks of all cultures and genders —perhaps you can’t live without your abuelo’s Ajiaco or your zio’s Zabaglione. We’d love to share your family’s story through food.
Alpha Fresh will provide all the ingredients your superstar cook needs to whip up their signature dish – they just needs to bring the love!
Does this sound like something your fantastic family cook would be up for?
They don’t need to be a born television star—they just need to be comfortable showing our very friendly host how to cook their signature dish while a couple of people with cameras float around.
They’ll also just need to talk our host through the process—if English is their second language, a family member is more than welcome to come along to help.
We will make the whole experience as painless as possible and it won’t take more than a few hours, tops.
What they’ll get out of it.
If your nominated family member is chosen as part of the series, Alpha Fresh will give them a $250 voucher—as well as one for you!
They’ll also get some gorgeous professional photos of her cooking up a storm and be able to see themself on video! What a wonderful keepsake for future generations.

At the end of the series, we’ll be asking readers to vote for their favourite family recipe. The best part? The favourite home cook will win a year’s worth of free food (52 x $100 vouchers)!
How to nominate
- Firstly, best ask if your family member is keen to share their recipe with the world (well, the people of Canberra, at least!).
- Next, make sure they’re comfortable cooking in front of a few strangers (a couple of who’ll be filming).
- Complete the nomination form below—we’ll start picking candidates from Friday 18 November, but we’ll have a rolling selection process throughout the series. Once we assess the nominations, we’ll be in touch to let you know the outcome.
