“Chocolate is endless in terms of possibilities.” When someone makes a statement like that, you…
EAST Hotel Meets Local Wineries series of events is a great opportunity to get to know some of Canberra’s most innovative and influential winemakers and taste their finest creations.
We heard it on the grapevine.
Canberra is lucky enough to be surrounded by incredible wineries, but your next wine tasting adventure just got a whole lot closer to home…Inner South-close, in fact. Over the next two weeks, EAST Hotel is teaming up with Mada Wines and Mount Majura Vineyard to offer wine-tasting right in the gorgeous hotel lobby.
Hamish Young, winemaker at Mada Wines, is keen to introduce some of his favourite drops to the city.
“The wine tasting event will be interesting, and informative, but most importantly a place where you can enjoy the company of your friends,” he explains. “There will be a vast array of wines, including some of my very limited, one-off sui generis wines.”
Hamish discovered a love for wine after spending time in the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand, known for its merlot cabernet blends and Chardonnay, before getting a decade of experience under his belt at Eden Road Wines.
“Like Canberra, long Sunday lunches at vineyards were common occurrences in Hawkes Bay. This generated intrigue in me when I was growing up, and the rest is history. Winemaking is an addiction, but one that I’m glad to have!”
Now, he’s struck out on his own with Mada. As a Canberra-wine obsessive, Hamish’s wines use grapes from all over the region, embracing the diversity of our local environment.
“We can grow many varieties really well due to the vast vagaries of soils and microclimates. We have an eclectic bunch of producers here which all bring their own spin on how to handle these intriguing sites, but have a collective desire to provide a high-quality authentic product.”
After chatting to Hamish at the Mada wine tasting pop-up on 11 April, guests can treat themselves to an exquisite meal at Agostinis (with matching Mada wines, of course.) Then, on Thursday 18 April, the Mount Majura team will pop in for an evening of tasting, including their signature single-vineyard tempranillo.
This EAST Hotel Meets Local Wineries series of events is a great opportunity to get to know some of Canberra’s most innovative and influential winemakers and taste their finest creations. According to Hamish, it’s a match made in foodie heaven.
“I’m excited to work with a team of real, genuine people and I love Agostinis; it’s delicious and authentic. We’re just going to have a bit of fun!”
