The story on Morning Glory

Posted on

The team behind beloved Narrabundah contemporary Asian eatery XO are cooking up something special in NewActon, with new venture Morning Glory set to take over the space currently occupied by A.Baker.

“As the name suggests, Morning Glory will be all about daylight dining, whereas XO is all about the long lunch, dinner and nightcaps,” explains Greg Lally, Director of XO and now Morning Glory. “Essentially, we are looking to bring inventiveness and service quality we have been able to incubate at XO to breakfast and lunch.”

Greg says that the breakfast concept was partly inspired by lots of early mornings spent hard at work at XO.

“A lot of our strategising, planning and general trash talk occurred around the breakfast table. As a result, we have always mused on the possibility to do an early morning spot.”

And, of course, it was also driven by a passion for what is arguably the best meal of the day: breakfast.

“There is a lot of childhood nostalgia and some interesting cultural quirks wrapped up around the morning meal, which has always fascinated us, particularly because we have such a mixed heritage as a group. Our menu plays off our team’s experiences growing up in Australia with strong roots in South East Asia and the sometimes unexpected harmonies between eastern and western morning cuisine.”

When it comes to designing a space to encapsulate all that, the team partnered with local interior design studio Capezio Copeland, which is also responsible for the beautiful fit out at XO. The resulting design is light and inviting, influenced by mid-century architecture, the Asian-inspired menu and the cloud phenomena that lends its name to the cafe.

“We wanted to create a space that suited these themes of exploration and discovery while also being very familiar and comfortable,” says Greg.

Setting up shop in NewActon was a no-brainer for Greg and the XO team. Canberrans should keep an eye on the neighbourhood (and social media) for this new addition, set to open at the start of September.

“New Acton has to be up there with some of the best food and wine options metre-by-metre in Canberra. We think we will complement the existing landscape and hopefully inject something a little bit different to the mornings of locals and visitors alike. While our lips are still sealed on specifics, we think you will be pleasantly surprised.”
