Mountain Creek Wholefoods making room for mountains of bread!

The institution that is Mountain Creek Wholefoods at the Griffith shops has always had its rusted-on clientele of health-focused, supplement-loving, bulk-buying customers.

But now sourdough and patisserie lovers have joined the chat.

Last month, L’epi Bakery owners Giada Peloso and Ignace Diompy opened a small bakery that takes up the alcove off the main Mountain Creek shop where lifestyle products used to be stocked.

“The reaction has been extremely positive,” says Giada.

The pair bought Mountain Creek at the end of last year from its former owner of nearly four decades, John Needham, who tragically died last month.

And while the store has received an outpouring of grief over the loss of John in recent weeks, the arrival of fresh baked goods has only elicited happiness as Mountain Creek continues to stock more than 8000 products from 200 suppliers in the existing space, supplying Canberra’s most conscious consumers with all their favourite brands.

Out of deference to John, Giada and Ignace chose not to make a big deal of the opening of the bakery, preferring to let customers wander past and take in the shelves of fresh-baked organic loaves and glassed counter containing all those spectacular patisserie creations L’epi is known for.

Giada reasons that health-conscious people can still enjoy a sweet treat alongside their apple cider vinegar and buckwheat cakes, and the bakery is sourcing as many organic and healthy ingredients as possible, as well as offering a substantial gluten-free range.

For those who are delighted to join the queues each morning for a crunchy baguette, there’s an added bonus of a barista bar at the back of the bakery, pumping out ONA coffee and selling beans. The couple will shortly have permission for chairs and tables out the front to allow for the quintessential joy of a morning espresso with a still-warm croissant (while restocking the pantry with a two-kilo bag of dried lentils, of course).

And for Mountain Creek customers who used to love the back counter wholefood café to source all manner of delicious daily salads and more, Giada and Ignace are bringing that back in the coming months. Good news for foodies all round.
