Six brunch locations in Canberra that go beyond bacon and eggs

Posted on

There’s nothing like Australia’s café culture – and with a city full of foodie obsessives, it’s safe to say you can find some of the best brunches in Canberra.

But what if you’re looking for a place serving up more than a flat white and smashed avo on toast? While we have some amazing cafes that are known (and loved) for the classics, there are a few hidden gems changing the brunch game with a menu that promises more than a sprinkle of feta when the season changes.

Here are five spots in Canberra making brunch serious business – and from loaded croissants to kimchi pancakes, you have plenty to choose from.

Clover Dining (City)

The Egg Benefit.

Clover Dining might be known for its unique lunch and dinner dining experience, but did you know they also serve breakfast from 7 am until 11 am?

Continuing to pay tribute to its concept Japanese Italian cuisine, the breakfast menu is full of mouthwatering dishes like the Egg Benefit (a croissant loaded with avocado, mizuna, red wine dressing, poached eggs, hollandaise and parmesan) and the Salmon Salata On Toast (grain toast with capers, olive, mizuna, avocado, tomato, red wine dressing and smoked salmon).

Serving up unexpected yet delicious combinations, your next bestie brunch location is sorted.

With premium coffee, authentic Turkish flavours, and irresistible desserts, this family-owned café in the city has all the classic breakfast dishes you love, alongside some more unique options for diners looking for something different.

Along with the Turkish Breakfast Banquet for two – which comes out on a board and includes three fried eggs with sujuk, feta, olives, salad, borek rolls, simit and Turkish bread – you can also dig into Çılbır (AKA Turkish Eggs) and Menemen: a dish made of sauteed capsicum and onion with eggs on a bed of tomato sauce and served with parsley, feta, pepper flakes and bread.

Zero Complex (Braddon)

This fusion café is making a name for itself amongst Lonsdale Street’s cool eateries because Zero Complex offers something a little bit different.

Serving a menu full of classics that any Aussie would recognise, here each dish has a touch of Korean flair – from the Bulgogi Benny with a Yuza hollandaise to the Kimchi Pancakes with a poached egg, BBQ sauce, Kewpie mayo and greens.

Fresh, flavoursome and a nice change from a B&E roll, if you’re looking for something very different, they also have Bunsik, a Bibim Bowl, Hotteok and more on the menu.

Who can resist an Italian inspired breakfast? Along with some stunning lakeside views, Café Sosta is serving up a breakfast menu that will transport you to Italy from 7.30 am until 11.30 am.

Think: the Sosta Frittata with chorizo, broccolini leaves and Parmigiano, and the Egg & Schulz Bacon Roll with Fontina cheese, sweet tomato relish and pickled chilli on a milk brioche bun, along with a selection of croissants and cannoli. All best enjoyed with an espresso, of course.

Travel to the southside for a taste of Latin America at Café Blanco. Something of a suburban hidden gem, this little café serves up some serious flavour with their unique Latino cooking.

Here you’ll find rotating dishes like a goat cheese, potato, and chorizo Spanish omelette, and the delicious combination of mushrooms, burrata, and pistachios on toast.

And with interiors that include warm white walls, natural timber, brown accents and terrazzo tables, it promises something very different from Canberra’s otherwise industrial chic cafes.

Serving great food and coffee for over a decade, we’ll forgive you if you’ve forgotten about this hidden gem – but consider this your sign to book yourself a table.

Known for their decadent French Toast offerings, it’s their latest creation that has us drooling. Tiramisu inspired and made with coffee mascarpone, mixed berry compôte and chocolate flakes, you know you want some!
