Six paw-fect al fresco dining spots for you (and your pooch)

Posted on

As we blink our open in shock at another sunny day in Canberra, the urge to run outside, sing for joy, and soak up some much-needed vitamin D is…well, hard to resist.

So, let’s not fight these compulsions when it comes to mealtime.

Literally translating to “eating in the fresh air,” the Italian tradition of al fresco dining is something both you and your pooch can enjoy. From classic Canberra pubs, mouth-watering cafés, and exciting new restaurants, go forth and explore Canberra foodies’ havens—al fresco style.

Bone appetit!

Luna Cheese Co is making all of our foodie dreams come true. But the best part is it’s pet friendly! Doggie brunch date anyone?

Not to mention they are the only café in Canberra serving up Bingsoo—a traditional Korean dessert that will have you and your doggo drooling.

Old Canberra Inn

There’s perhaps no better way to spend long, warm evenings in Lyneham than this timeless little pub. With local brews, hearty meals and a welcoming atmosphere, it’s a relaxing, slow-paced environment to celebrate a long work week (and soak up the last of the day’s sun rays).

Not to mention the generous outdoor seating that guarantees you and your pooch a spot outside. Enjoy!

Canteen

Dairy Road in Fyshwick is quickly becoming an al fresco oasis, particularly with the arrival of Canteen (a ramen lovers delight from the much-loved Ramen Daddy in the city).

Bringing to life authentic Japanese street food, their hot ramen bowls are perfect for when summer nights become just a touch too cold. And yes, don’t be deceived by their new location—outdoor seating does exist in abundance (it’s just tucked away at the side of the building).

Tilley’s

Are you and your pooch in the mood for a café oozing in bluesy charm? Let us point you in the direction of Tilley’s. Loved by locals for its vintage aesthetic,  quality cuppas and perfectly cooked croissants, you can easily spend all morning here.

Simply grab a table outside and bask in the leafy sun-kissed trees of Lyneham.  Heaven!

Sweet Bones

For a delicious, all-vegan café in the heart of Braddon, Sweet Bones is really a no-brainer. Their outdoor seating is shadowed by a large oak tree, looking out to views of Braddon’s busy streets. We recommended trying one of the vegan cinnabons—think warm, gooey and irresistibly sweet.

Your little pooch will be frantically licking up whatever crumbs you leave behind (and we don’t blame them). It’s a yappy al fresco dining experience all round.

No café lends itself to outdoor dining more than this groovy little spot.

And with a dog oval directly beside it, you can enjoy your cuppa and sweet treat while your pooch happily frolics in the morning sun. Yes, please!
