Sunday Supper Club: Mr Papa’s Carlos Ramirez

Posted on

When’s the last time you enjoyed a three-course meal cooked by one of Canberra’s leading chefs for less than $50 per person? That’s the concept of the Sunday Supper Club, presented by HerCanberra in collaboration with Winning Appliances.

On the first Sunday of each month, the Winning Appliances’ Kingston showroom is transformed into an intimate dining environment for just 24 guests.

The next event on Sunday 5 May features Mr Papa’s Chef Carlos Ramirez, alongside his brother Moncho, at a Sunday Supper Club that will take you to Peru.

You’ll watch Carlos whip up his creations in the Winning Appliances demonstration kitchen and hear the story of his food journey in a conversation hosted by HerCanberra CEO Amanda Whitley.

Your ticket price includes matched wines and entertainment.

You’ll leave not only with full stomachs but with loads of ideas and inspirations for entertaining at your place.

Carlos Ramirez is the founder of Mr Papa Peruvian-Street Food – Catering and considers himself a little ambassador of his country wherever he goes.

His career started 15 years ago, with a degree in Hospitality Management in Lima in Peru, a move prompted by the passion for food and hospitality he discovered as a six-year-old helping with his grandparents’ catering business.

From there it was on to positions with Starwood and Orient-Express Hotels, with Carlos then travelling to the United States of American (USA) to complete an internship with Hilton Hotels. He began as a kitchen hand/service assistant, later rising to Restaurants and Outlets Manager. In 2007, he was recognised as part of Hilton’s Team of The Year and South West Florida – Hospitality Association Rising Star 2008.

After completing his internship in the USA, Carlos returned to Peru and worked alongside Chef Mitsuharu Tsumura to open Nikkei restaurant in Maido – ranked first in Latin America and seventh in San Pellegrino’s World’s 50th Best Restaurants.

Heading down under in 2010, Carlos spent three years working in the food and beverage management department at Rydges Hotels and Resorts, finally finding himself in Canberra making his own dreams come true and launching Mr Papa, alongside Moncho, in 2013.

In the year since we launched Sunday Supper Club, we’ve seen quite a few familiar faces popping up at our events, and while we love seeing regulars, we’ve also been hearing from some potential guests frustrated at their inability to get tickets via the Eventbrite system.

So we’re changing things up a bit.

Rather than a ‘first in, best dressed’ system, we’re inviting people to register their interest in attending a Sunday Supper Club event via this Google Form (don’t worry, you don’t need to sign into Google to register).

You have until 5 pm on Wednesday 24 April 2019 to register for the 5 May event with Carlos and Moncho. From there, we will randomly draw names, and contact those people to see if they—and their nominated number of guests—would like to attend. They’ll then be given further instructions on how they can get their hands on tickets.

We hope that this will even the playing field and give everyone a chance to enjoy the wonderful experience that is Sunday Supper Club.

Those who aren’t successful for the first event will join the waitlist and be considered for future events.

Register your interest in attending here.

Sunday Supper Club is presented as part of a commercial partnership between HerCanberra and Winning Appliances.
