Tamago: bubble waffles come to Belconnen

Egg waffles, gai daan jai, puffles…

Whatever you call them, a bubble waffle by any other name would taste as sweet, especially when it comes to Belconnen’s newest resident, Tamago Bubblewrap Co.

Serving the street treat made famous by Hong Kong vendors and named after the Japanese word for egg—the main ingredient of the fluffy snack—owner of Tamago Victor Lee said the idea was formed over the course of many overseas trips.

“I have family in Hong Kong and have been there many times to visit, and every time I would eat bubble waffles,” explains Victor, who grew up in Canberra and has always had a keen interest in the local food scene. Along with his partner, Monique, who hails from Macau, Victor saw a gap in the market and decided to create the perfect bubble waffle recipe to suit Australian tastes.

“Egg waffles in Hong Kong are thinner and crispier—they’re usually hollow,” explains Victor. “But what we created has more of a fluffy consistency, like cake, which goes so well with ice cream.”

Served warm and wrapped around fruit and ice cream (hence Tamago’s ‘bubble wrap’ name), ice cream is just the beginning when it comes to these delicious dessert burritos, with Tamago offering over 24 waffle combinations, including savoury and ‘grid’ style waffles (hint: the Nutella grid waffle is to die for).

These sundae style combinations include the Choco Co (bubble waffle with Connoisseur Chocolate Brownie ice cream, fresh berries, Strawberry Pocky Sticks and marshmallow) and Kinder Wonderland (bubble waffle with Nutella or chocolate sauce, fresh berries, Kinder chocolate, crushed Oreos and whipped cream).

“It’s been very popular so far—when people see our products people are always amazed,” says Victor. “Not many Australians have had bubble waffles before but that’s not an issue as waffles are familiar thing and ice cream is a familiar thing, so we have so many customers who return.”

In addition to waffles, Tamago serves hot dogs, and bubble tea (incredibly popular Asian milk and fruit tea drinks) in flavours like Very Taro Milk Tea and Honey Jasmine Green Tea.

“Everything is made to order, so they’re made in-house fresh every day,” explains Victor. “There may be a few minutes wait on the product, but that way we can ensure the quality is high and everything is fresh.”
