Today, Campbell finally joins the ranks of Canberra suburbs sporting a spot-on local.

Campbell’s champion comes in the form of sleek pub The Pedlar, which sits in prime position on Constitution Avenue, opposite the Campbell5 development and ASIO.

A short stroll from the newly renovated Campbell parkland and the lake, The Pedlar seems ripe to become a new star in the gastropub galaxy.


Open seven days a week from 6:30am until late, there’s breakfast, lunch and dinner available as well as small plates and desserts. Co-founder Simon Hammond says he hopes The Pedlar is seen as an all-day venue, with lunch turning into afternoon drinks which turn into watching the game on the telly to grabbing a bite for dinner and maybe some more drinks.

“I’d like people to see it as a local,” explains Simon. “It’s really for the Campbell [residents]. They’ve almost been along for the ride with us and then opening today it was a great morning.”


Simon cut his teeth on venues like Shorty’s and Edgar’s so he’s experienced at creating a venue that welcomes all, all day.

“We want that really relaxed, family-friendly, pet-friendly place that people can bring their kids to and get a kids meal…but also come down on a Sunday afternoon at 2pm and stay until dinner.”


When HerCanberra visited The Pedlar on it’s opening day, today, the afternoon sun was spilling into airy interiors of blonde wood, aqua, light grey and bronze. The decor is about as minimalist as you can get in a good sized venue, with the light fittings, bar back and beer taps all kept in clean, sleek lines. Darlings of the Canberra sustainable furniture scene boyandgirlco. created The Pedlar’s tables and benches, the planter boxes inside and outside and the interior chalkboard. There’s also cute accents like interior plants, panels of hexagonal tile and the venue’s signature aqua/bronze/grey/white chevron decorating both the walls and menus.


Just in time for Friday after work drinks there’s an impressive line up of craft beers on tap like Young Henrys and Stone and Wood as well as boutique spirits like Poor Tom’s gin. Simon explains there will be a focus on local wines too.


Canberra breakfast fanatics will be pleased to know that Pialligo bacon makes multiple appearances in the breakfast line up (served until 11.30am) and fancy favourites like Shakshuka Baked Eggs, Pan Seared Sardines and Coconut Crusted French Toast share menu space with classics like a Breakfast Roll with eggs and bacon and a classic big breakfast.

“It’s a fine line between the tradies over the road and the suits so we don’t want to discriminate against anyone – we want to welcome everybody,” says Simon.
