Village Café is Waramanga Shops’ newest resident

Posted on

There is nothing better than a fresh face at your local shops and Waramanga is the latest suburb to welcome a new spot for breakfast, lunch and coffee catchups.

Village Café has now opened and is a dream come true for owner Neil Batterley.

“We always said that if the opportunity arose to open up a café in the suburbs and we were in the position to, we would just grab it,” says Neil.

Well, that opportunity arrived and now Neil’s little slice of hospo heaven, Village Café, has opened at Waramanga Shops.

“We want to produce the types of dishes we want to eat when we go out,” he explains. “Whether that’s a cheeky pastry with a coffee or an amazing breaky like our twist on a classic Eggs Benny with our Rueben croquettes, complete with a 63-degree egg and house-made hollandaise sauce, or a delicious rotating pasta and salad specials board using the best handmade pasta in Canberra or locally grown garden market produce for our salads.”

“We’ve really modernised the space and we’re bringing good quality coffee, a friendly face and approachable seasonal menu—which I think Canberrans will love to see in Waramanga.”

After two decades in the hospitality industry from Sydney, London and Canberra—including being a key player in the creation of Ducks Nuts in Dickson—Neil knows all the tricks of the trade when it comes to bringing perfection to the plate, or the cup.

“We’ve partnered with some really amazing local producers such as Redbrick who will supply us with coffee, and other amazing local suppliers to bring their locally made produce such as amazing cheeses, meats and pastries and everything in-between,” he says.

“We’ll be making jams and all of our sauces in house. We’ll also have rotating charcuterie boards featuring a range of Australian and European foods that are at affordable and approachable prices.

“We want to create a warm and welcoming café space that has a sense of community for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re a local parent looking for a spot to bring your kids before or after school, a special weekend breakfast with the family, or simply need a quick grab-and-go coffee, we’ve got you covered.”

To begin, Village Café will be starting out with a breakfast and lunch service seven days a week, but Neil already has big plans to jump into the dinner trade as well.

“We’ve got some pretty amazing wine suppliers lined up, including some natural wines, and so we will get some dinner services up and running along with dinner events a little bit down the track,” he explains.
