Heading to the coast? There’s plenty more than sun and surf to explore – there are also some amazing culinary adventures to be found.
Here are some places to try from north to south, based on our own experiences.
A word on accuracy: You might need to check holiday opening hours. So PLEASE call the place before you set out or make a booking to make sure they’re open. And please don’t yell at us. It’s the holidays!

Milkwood Bakery (Berry)

Head to the heart of Berry to find one of the best bakeries in town. Established in 2012, you’ll find the full range of Berry Organic Sourdough bread on offer, as well as a mouthwatering and ever-changing array of cakes, pastries, and other savouries. The Berry Tea Shop is dedicated to all things tea — teapots, cups, cozies, cards and, of course, loose-leaf tea. Browse the collection or sit and sip on a cup of their exquisite tea with a slice of cake (and yes, there are gluten-free options) or freshly baked scones with homemade jam and cream. It’s worth noting that bookings are highly recommended due to limited seating and will only be taken by phone.

World Famous Fish and Chips (Huskisson)
This one gets 10/10 for location and taste. Grab a bundle before you head off for a spot of whale watching or take it to the big park next to Moona Moona Creek where it’s shallow, shady and family friendly with BBQs and amenities.

Jervis Bay Brewing Co. (Huskisson)
Hidden in the industrial area of Huskisson, this gem serves craft beers in their pet-friendly lit beer garden. Featuring picnic benches shaded by big umbrellas, and a fire pit for chilly evenings, you can sit back and sip at tasting paddles, while the kids climb on the play equipment, before digging into some food from the onsite food truck.

Flamin Galah Brewing Co. (Huskisson)
Opening the brick-and-mortar brewpub in 2021 after having brewed and sold their beers since 2018, here you’ll find a great drinks and a great vibe (who doesn’t love pink concrete?). Choose from one of their many signature cocktails or sip on fresh beers brewed only meters away. As for food, at the food truck you’ll find everything from nachos to crispy chicken bao buns.

5 Little Pigs (Huskisson)
Located on the main street of Huskisson, 5 Little Pigs is a small family run venue that’s a great breakfast or lunch spot. With a menu packed full of flavour (think pea and ricotta fritters, served with fennel, asparagus salad and whipped ricotta and warm black sticky rice pudding with coconut, sesame praline and dragon fruit) it never disappoints.

This little café has a big heart, making wholesome, nourishing wholefoods in house daily. A little bonus? It’s overlooking Ulladulla Harbour.

A coastal bakery that’s a cut above the rest. The sourdough is out of this world. A decadent pit stop if you’re taking the Old Braidwood Road and driving down the coast.

The entire HC office agrees that this is a must-do if you’re staying around Milton— or if even if you’re not!
Don’t be fooled by the name—Pilgrims’ version of vegetarian is not a salad-leaves-and-kale type of affair. All of their dishes are generous and absolutely delicious. Our favourites include their Pancakes With The Lot, and the Bliss Burger. Get excited.

East Lynne Store (15km north of Batemans Bay)
So worth the drive for their pies, wherever you’re staying on the coast. These pies are so legendary they were even voted #1 Pie on the Coast by Tim the Yowie Man for Traveller. Now that’s an endorsement.
The best part about this store is the no-frills approach—just order your piping hot pie, decide on your sauce (or whether you’d like fresh cream if you’re grabbing one of their cherry or apple pies, which are highly recommended) and tuck in. No one is expecting you to eat with cutlery here.
East Lynne Store is attached to a petrol station so this would make a good fuel stop (of both kinds) if you’re travelling from north to south or even back to Canberra via the Kangaroo Valley from Batemans.

JJ’s at The Marina (Batemans Bay)
This laid-back coastal restaurant celebrates the flavours of the South Coast with a focus on locally and regionally sourced seafood and produce. Think a fish burger with grilled local fish, tomato basil salsa, fresh house slaw and tartare sauce, chilli garlic local deep-sea Royal Red prawns in olive oil and more.
You’ll also find an extensive cocktail menu and an impressive wine list carefully selected by their in-house Sommelier, perfect to sup on while overlooking the Marina.

Oyster Shed (Batemans Bay)
On the banks of the mighty Clyde River, The Oyster Shed is a “farm gate for fresh oysters sold directly to the public”. Prized for their taste, Clyde oysters are well known and this is one of the best places to sample them.
You can buy oysters to take home or enjoy them at the Shed. They also sell a range of condiments that have been hand-picked for their complementary nature to the oysters. And if that’s not enough, you can also indulge in salads, tarts, slices and coffee.

Sam’s Pizza (Batemans Bay)
Sam’s is hearty Italian at its best and one of our favourite places for date night on the South Coast. Bea likes to order a bunch of entrees, pasta and pizzas to share with a bottle of wine (of course).
The service is always friendly too, even when they’re under the pump. The best seats in the house are out the back, facing the Marina. Book around sunset, sit back on their comfy benches and indulge on pizza, pasta, salads and more.

Promising good vibes, good times, and good food, at Se7en Café you’ll find fresh and flavoursome options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You now have two locations to choose from – they’ve recently opened another café in the shopping centre!
Their original location features views of the beautiful Clyde River (where they source their oysters). It’s hard to pick just one dish…but if we had to choose, you can’t go past the Cold Seafood Plate– it comes with Clyde River oysters, tiger prawns, Tasmanian smoked salmon, and pickled baby octopus, with pickle aioli and lemon.

A Bermy institution, the Gelati Clinic is named after its old premises a street away, which used to be the town’s veterinary clinic.

The Wharf Locavore (Tathra)
Featuring a gorgeous selection of ready-to-eat antipasto, locally made preserves, and with one of the best seats in town (right on the famous Tathra Wharf), you can’t go past the Locavore for a light lunch or morning tea.

From the team who arguably started the speakeasy trend with their Shady Pines Saloon in Sydney comes Dulcie’s Cottage. You’ll find one of the coolest South Coast bars inside an unassuming weatherboard cottage in Merimbula.
