Your city breakfast guide

Posted on

After all, it is the most important meal of the day. Here’s where to find a delicious breakfast in Canberra’s city and surrounding suburbs.

There’s something about going out for breakfast. And nowhere captures this magic quite like the bustling centre of Canberra, where breakfast venues have elevated the meal into an art form all its own.

From power breakfasts fuelling government workers to leisurely weekend affairs that stretch well into the afternoon, here cafés cater to every pace and preference. Covering the CBD and surrounding precincts, welcome to part three of our breakfast guide.

Just a note: this is by no means an extensive list to end all lists. These are just some places where we know you can get a morning meal that will leave you full and happy. Please don’t yell at us, we know there are many more places to eat out there 😊

Al’s Deli and Diner (City)

Perfect for when you just need a gourmet sandwich and a cup of coffee, Al’s Deli and Diner is home to a delicious breakfast menu. The Sausage & Egg Muffin with a hash brown will always hit the spot, but they also have pancakes with whipped butter and maple syrup, granola and classic avo on toast.

The sister of INTRA PRVN in Campbell, this cool café is all about serving European comfort food – perfect for when you want something simple, but delicious. An example? Think peas, mint, lemon and ricotta on sourdough or the mouthwatering combination of salami cotto, stracciatella and chilli honey on sourdough. All best enjoyed with an INTRA Speciality Coffee, of course.

Serving good quality, simple and delicious food and drink, Barrio is a coffee bar and roaster that’s always a good idea for breakfast. Just order whatever delicious thing they’re serving on toast that day and thank us later.

They had us at ‘Breakfast Burritos’. At Catbird, the servings are large, and the food is fresh with a menu inspired by the melting pot of cultures found in Southern California.

With a breakfast menu featuring overflowing burritos (like the Cowboy Burrito with egg, spicy cheese sauce, black beans, potato, cilantro crema and your choice of salsa) to more ‘Canberra-esque’ staples including an avocado toast with a Bel Air twist (radish, pickled red onion, green goddess sauce and brown bread), you will not leave this café hungry.

Open from 6 am on weekdays, this little city café is a taste of Europe without having to book a plane ticket – and in this economy, what gets better than that?

Serving fresh focaccia overflowing with fillings, loaded croissants and more, don’t worry – they also have all of your favourite café classics (yes, including eggs on toast).

For those seeking something a little different to Australian café classics, Café Cultura in the city is a breath of fresh air with a menu of hearty Mediterranean food. There’s everything from a Turkish banquet for two, which comes out on a board and provides a pan of fried eggs with sujuk, feta, olives, salad, borek rolls, simit and Turkish bread to Smashed Avo served with eggs, zaatar, feta, tomato, cucumber and beetroot dip.

Knocked back with a Turkish coffee or tea (or a Toby’s Estate flat white if you prefer), this family-owned and run café is worth a visit.

Gather (Braddon)

Sustainable, community-focused and clean-health-driven. Gather in Braddon ticks a lot of boxes – including having a delicious breakfast menu. Wondering what they can tempt you with? Smoked Trout & Bravas, a Dragonfruit Bowl, Steak & Eggs and the Gather Quesadilla are just some of the highlights.

Because you can’t mention B-Side without mention INTRA PRVN. Home of the iconic kimchi jaffle, the driving principle of the menu here is simple and sustainable food. Taking a conscious approach to seasonality while also showcasing the classics, the menu is small but mighty – because while there isn’t a lot of choice, there’s plenty of flavour.

Redbrick Coffee City (City)

Previously known as ARC, here you can sip on Redbrick coffee while enjoying a food menu of refined classics without having to venture far from the CBD.

Using local and seasonal produce, foodies head to Redbrick Coffee City to sink their teeth into vanilla hotcakes with boysenberry ice-cream, Potato Fritters served with capsicum, olives, cheese, chives, romesco, herb oil, and a poached egg and a classic Chilli Scram. Add it to your breakfast bucket list.

Home to one of the best matchas in Canberra (if you know, you know) Supersweet is more than a pit stop – it’s a dining destination in its own right.

The breakfast menu here has everything you could want, from Rainbow Fritters to Avocado Bruschetta. But what you really need to try is their sweet treats. With Mille Crepe Cakes, various flavours of Basque cheesecake and house-made chunky cookies on offer, it would be rude not too.

Tasa Coffee House (City)

Something of a hidden gem at the Australian National University, here you’ll uncover some amazing food. Serving a mix of Filipino dishes alongside classics like a Bacon and Egg Roll, it’s not hard to see why it has such a loyal following.

Who can say no to buttermilk pancakes with ube coconut sauce, muesli, berry compote, vanilla ice cream and seasonal fruits (pictured)?

This is an iconic café that blazed the path for Canberra’s 2010s foodie renaissance, making it a must visit. Serving a ‘greatest-hits-style menu’ with something for every taste and occasion, options include French Toast with cinnamon-soaked brioche, butterscotch, mandarin, strawberry, yuzu mascarpone, butter crumble and chocolate almond shards and the Avocado – a dish served with whipped goats’ cheese, pomegranate vinaigrette, pickled beetroot, salsa verde, hazelnut dukkah and a poached egg on sourdough.

Oh, and we haven’t even mentioned the ONA coffee.
