Displaying the best of living and entertaining in Yarralumla

Posted on

When a home is created for the purpose of being a display home, it comes with levels of craftsmanship and finish that conventional builds usually do not have.

After all, display homes are the very best version of a builder’s vision, designed specifically to showcase their talents and set them apart from the competition.

In the case of 15 Abbott Street, Yarralumla, it is clear that this was a display home – built by award-winning family-owned company Classic Constructions. There are aspects to this home that truly set it apart from others on the market and that would make living there a dream.

Take, for instance, the kitchen. This is a space beautifully designed, laden with features including a bank of Miele appliances (specifically not one but two Miele Moisture Plus ovens, a steam oven and inbuilt microwave) with an expanse of stainless steel benchtop on one side, sparkling white stone on the other, and a matching industrial style range.

But when you start investigating the storage, you move into a whole new realm. Two banks of wood-framed feature cupboards redefine the concept of putting away the dishes. In this house, a soft touch will open a large vertical cupboard drawer, and once the dish is retrieved, you simply push a button to close it.  Nothing slams in this culinary space. More storage is located in the separate butler’s pantry.

Similarly, the staircase is something of an engineering feat. Wooden steps are framed by glass, and underneath the first landing is an internal water feature and garden. How do you know this? Because the landing floor features two massive glass inserts. It is a little disconcerting to walk directly on glass and over water, but it is certainly impressive.

The other unmissable feature is the feature hand-stacked grey stone wall, which anchors the front of the house to the landscape and continues inside, through the entryway and through the formal and informal living areas.

This feature is a stunning focal point which brings an organic feel to the modern home, complements the iron bark hardwood floors, and helps bring some of the outside in.

As for the home itself, it is a perfect family haven, built for indulgent living and entertaining. The downstairs living areas are vast and open-plan. Ceilings are extra high, and a design feature in the main living, dining and kitchen is a dark ceiling which has the effect of elevating it even higher.

The home features walls of glass bi-fold doors onto a landscaped yard and a sparkling in-ground pool. A covered eating area with barbecue is made more enticing by the feature wood ceiling and large fan.

Down one side of the house is the parents’ retreat, secluded from the upstairs bedrooms and with its own private terrace out onto the pool area.

The ensuite is another major feature of the house, featuring a dark granite stone free-standing tub with two matching statement hand basins. There are views outside from the vantage of a long soak. Care has also been taken to install planter boxes into the side fences and glaze the corridors so the home truly connects to the landscape. Once again, no effort has been spared and no corner overlooked.

Down the other end of the house is a formal living room with gas fire, a large study which could convert to another downstairs bedroom with its own bathroom and separate entry (perfect for teens or perhaps grandparents).

Upstairs are another three roomy bedrooms and a bathroom with yet another living space for a teenager’s retreat (and the lucky kids get another gas fire to enjoy).

This home has everything. Hydronic underfloor heating, reverse cycle air conditioning, remote-controlled skylights upstairs and in the laundry, solar power and a self-cleaning pool. Its double glazing and solar orientation give it an EER of 5.

It is a statement home in a statement suburb offering the sort of attention to detail and fine finishes that would make any owner proud and grateful. As the garden comes into bloom, this former display home is ready to shine.
