The Mugga Way statement home built for epic gatherings and grand celebrations
Posted on
Mugga Way has plenty of statement homes, but 2 Mugga Way makes among the biggest statements of them all.
This enormous (more than 2,800 square metre) block contains an iconic family home which stands dramatically at the Deakin end of Canberra’s premier street.

But while it is imposing, it is also a well-laid-out and welcoming space, having been a much-loved place to raise children and host myriad memorable events over the years.
There are several reasons for this – the top being a near-commercial-size open bar off the living room where guests can settle in for a cocktail upon arrival. Good vibes continue within a slightly hidden underground wine cellar, which is large enough to host a dinner party amongst the vintage bottles.

The more the merrier, it seems, in these vast living areas that flow down one side of the house. From the main bedroom, you can gaze down 70 metres through the open-plan living spaces.

The living room itself has a massive open fire and seating, before you reach an area perfect for a game of pool, and finally arrive in the dining room with a long table which could comfortably seat 20. All surround the kitchen, out of which a feast for the masses can be easily assembled, such is the vast expanse of dark grey granite bench space.

A smaller and more intimate sunroom faces the back garden, where more casual family meals are enjoyed, and next to that is a family room where kids can unwind, so this is not a house to get utterly lost in.
Still, it packs a visual punch thanks to imposing Oregon timber double front doors, which open onto a wall of glass looking out onto a sparkling blue pool and outdoor entertaining area.

The vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and slate floor are original to the home’s late 1970s build, and the current owners have respected the integrity of the original vision while making upgrades over the years, including a 30-kilowatt solar panel system and an upgraded roof.

They have also maintained the original architectural layout, which, like a Balinese pavilion, wraps around the pool and courtyard and makes summers feel like a resort holiday.
The six-bed, six-bathroom home has quite comfortably hosted more than 20 guests at once without anyone bumping into anyone else.

In fact, the current owners will be challenged by a downsize, having enjoyed such expansive living and truly enviable wardrobe space, which includes an entire bedroom that has been converted to a walk-in robe.
The home also lends itself to some dramatic art installations.

When asked to nominate what they have loved most about this abode, the owners say location. With nature reserve to one side, a tennis court to the other, and a gate directly backing onto Red Hill behind the pool, they are close to everything, and yet it feels like they are living on a rural property with absolute privacy and quiet.
They also love the Deakin end of Mugga Way, which is away from school traffic and Hindmarsh Drive.

With bedroom suites to suit children growing into adults and having plenty of their own space and a basement to hold any number of tools (or toys), here is a home to stretch out in, relax, and invite friends and family around. Just don’t be surprised when nobody wants to leave.
