With Canberra’s light rail network due for completion in late 2018, anticipation is building.
But already, hundreds of workers have put over 2.3 million hours towards this landmark service.
By the time the first passengers climb aboard a cherry red Light Rail Vehicle (LRV), Canberra’s most significant infrastructure project will have employed hundreds of locals, working across construction, engineering, logistics and organisational roles.
Krystle Thompson, Health Safety Environment Quality Manager for Canberra Metro Operations (CMO), is one such person. In her role, Krystle is responsible for developing the Rail Safety, Work Health and Safety, Environmental and Quality systems from scratch, which doesn’t sound intimidating at all.
“I have been on the project from the very beginning,” she explains. “This involved writing a lot of policies, management plans and procedures that will support us in the Operations Phase.”
For Krystle, light rail represents a new era of convenience and sustainability for Canberrans.
“The introduction of the light rail system will be a game changer for Canberra because I think the city has gone through a significant shift over the past few years, and is becoming more and more appealing to people who want a nice city lifestyle without all the fuss.”
But she points out that a more cosmopolitan city comes with its own challenges.
“As more and more people choose to relocate here, the traffic congestion will continue to worsen. The light rail will make it easier for people to commute to and from work, and will allow people to catch an LRV into places such as Braddon without having to worry about parking or designated drivers.”
Sally Coyle, Patronage and Marketing Manager with CMO agrees, adding that not only will the light rail offer more sustainable options for transport, but more comfortable ones too.
“Not only will it be a more convenient, safe and efficient mode of travel with free WIFI, but a friendly way of travelling,” she explains. One of the ways CMO will achieve this friendly service is by employing Customer Service Officers, who will be on board and at stops to assist and help passengers when they travel.
These Customer Service Officers will be the face of light rail, and are just one of the positions Canberra Metro Operations will be presenting at their Career Expo on Thursday 2 August.
“Our Career Expo will have many of our staff onsite ready to speak with job seekers and those who are interested in finding out more about a career in light rail,” says Sally.
“We will have information on the types of positions on offer now and in the future and our General Manager, Operational Manager, Safety Manager, Drivers, HR, Finance Staff, Engineers and Technicians will be on hand to answer any questions.”
Canberra Metro Operations will be actively recruiting at the Career Expo for Customer Service Roles and job seekers are encouraged to bring their resumés along.
Have an interest in all of the above? CMO HR Manager Alicia Welsh explains that once people are employed within the organisation, they will have diverse career progression opportunities. Working in a Senior Leadership Management team that is over 50% female in what might normally be considered a predominantly male industry, Alicia and Sally encourage women to consider all roles on offer at the Career Expo.
“Drivers have career progression to Duty Manager roles, we hope that some of our Customer Service Officers will be interested in becoming drivers or even Duty Managers,” says Sally.
Alicia adds that while women will naturally perform well as Customer Service Officers, “We are challenging more women to seriously consider a career as one of our drivers. This is a great opportunity for those who want a career change, who are looking to get back into the workforce, or just want a new challenge doing a job that they can enjoy.”
