Calling all business analysis professionals in Canberra!

Posted on

Canberra’s first IIBA Business Analysis Professional Day will happen on Thursday 14 November, focussing on how to be Professionally Adventurous.

Canberra’s business analysis professionals will have the chance to improve their skills, keep up with current industry trends and network with their colleagues over a full day at QT Canberra.

The Business Analysis Professional Day (BAPD) is the official International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) conference that takes place in capital cities across Australia and the world.

To kick things off, keynote speaker Gai Brodtmann, former Federal Member for Canberra, will deliver an address on the importance of adventure.

The BAPD will then be split into two streams of workshops and presentations from a range of industry professionals including cybersecurity expert Rajiv Shah, PWC consultant and former chair of the Hong Kong IIBA chapter Joy Hogwood, NSW Government Business Analyst Chale Dodge, University of Queensland Business Analyst Alexandra Cordes and IIBA Australian National President Hugh Peterken.

Meg Cavanagh, a consultant at Callida Consulting and IIBA member, says being part of this professional network has been a game-changer for her career.

“Not only does it give women access to professional networks, mentors and career prospects, but it allows women a greater input into the future of the profession. These events are so valuable because they offer advice to female professionals on what options are out there for their career.

“Developing a strong professional network is crucial, especially in Canberra. Personally, I think that the opportunity to offer a different perspective at events is valuable to everyone in the room.”

Meg believes the business analysis profession needs to keep evolving to stay relevant in a changing world.

“That’s why this BAPD will centre around how the business analysis profession and skill-set can support individuals in their pursuit of adventure, whether that be changing career types between APS to consulting or contracting, aiming for a promotion, managing a risky project or taking their career international.”

Throughout the day, attendees can also visit the Professional Marketplace to speak to and connect with sponsors, including recruiters, payroll companies, training providers and consultancy firms.

Lunch, coffee and lucky door prizes will be on offer, as well as a cocktail networking reception after the closing keynote.

“Our events connect professionals with businesses and employers across Canberra and we have a sticker system at all of our events so that people looking for work or for employees can easily recognise who to speak to,” Meg explains.

Along with the BAPD conference, the IIBA Canberra Chapter runs monthly events, which alternate between lectures that are open to the public and workshops that are only offered to members.

In 2020, the IIBA will also offer study groups to the community for CBAP Certification (Certified Business Analysis Practitioner). Plus, the IIBA Canberra Chapter is planning to reconsider the overall events schedule to make them more accessible to women and parents, so keep an eye out for new times.

Guests who plan to travel to Canberra for the BAPD can book a room at QT for a special conference attendee rate. For more information about the Business Analysis Professional Day and the IIBA in general, check out the website.
