10 ways to get creative in the time of COVID-19

Posted on

People have created art through crises and turmoil since forever.

I don’t know why, or what inspired them. Perhaps they needed a little joy, or they had the time on their hands, or maybe they just needed some type of way to let out their energy and emotions.

While we’re all sheltered safely in our homes, we’re advised to look after our physical and mental health— and each other. We’re also encouraged to ‘be creative’.

This has perhaps been spurred on by the surge in clever TikTok videos, remote choirs, and social media posts that have been spreading so much joy.

So what to do?

Well, whatever inspires you. If you already have your chosen art—then do that, master it, share it or teach it to someone else.

If you’re unsure—ask your inner child to remind you. It really doesn’t matter what you choose. This is your time to shine.

If you’re still stuck for ideas, here are ten you could try:

  1. Sketch your housemate (or spouse or kids)
  2. Whittle a potato
  3. Create a cartoon
  4. Design an emblem for your home
  5. Play an instrument
  6. Write a song
  7. Dance it out
  8. Write a poem
  9. Write a story
  10. Illustrate the story

Embracing your own creativity could be a fun a way to pass the time, and give you something new to share with your loved ones. It’s also a way to channel and express your emotions, and it could help more than you think.

Who knows…we might come out the other side of COVID-19 with a new-found talent, or at least some artefacts to mark these strange times.
