Lockdown Insta-faves: Who’s worth a follow in these unprecedented times
Posted on
It is only fair that a global pandemic suspends all guilt associated with exceeding screen time limits, right?
We all know that social media can be a cesspit of negativity and toxicity, not to mention the time-suck it creates to living a full and meaningful life. But right now, when a full and meaningful life stops at the driveway save for an hour or two of exercise each day, there is a certain comfort to be gained from curling up on the sofa and checking in on people, whether they be real life friends, or Instagram and TikTok personalities who you WOULD be friends with, if only they knew you existed…
Team HerCanberra is taking certain delight from some of the funniest people on the interwebs and want you to know how they are helping keep our spirits high during lockdown.
Jimmy Rees
@jimmyrees_
He used to be known as kids’ entertainer Jimmy Giggle, but Jimmy Rees is now the country’s favourite pandemic commentator.
Playing the role of each state and territory as they negotiate lockdowns, border closures, and the blame game, Jimmy’s “Meanwhile in Australia” videos are definitely not safe for kids. But crikey they are funny. Especially when the ACT gets a mention.

Carla from Bankstown
@carlafrombankstown
Listen but! If you ever wondered what it was like to answer the phones in NSW Premier Gladys Butterchicken’s office, then Carla’s your girl.
She is actually the drag persona of Benjahmin James, and the serve that she gives to gronk journalists and members of the public will help you vicariously eliminate any of the lockdown rage you might be experiencing. If strong language upsets you, then best avoid Carla.

The Betoota Advocate
@betootaadvocate
The headlines you read to laugh uproariously when the actual headlines make you want to cry.
We just can’t get enough of the constant stream of Betoota bulletins which tap a rich satirical vein. “Heavily Botoxed NRL WAG Tells Heavily Tattooed Husband To Not Let Those Needles Near Him.”

Pinky Patel
@pinkypatelofficial
Hello prends and welcome to my channel. Ever need someone to give you a no-nonsense explanation to stupid questions you could just Google?
Pinky is a proud feminist who wears a crown and comes to the rescue of many a confused gentleman with her wise words and chapstick. So good.

Lauren Dubois
@thelaurendubois
Our homegrown Insta-sensation, Lauren raises three gorgeous kids in Canberra with a wicked wit and healthy sense of cynicism (born no doubt from her time as a Press Gallery journalist).
Watch her try and maintain her sanity while homeschooling, and it’s even funnier when she doesn’t. Clever, relatable, and possessing quite the dramatic flair, we love Lauren and her kids.

Sam Youkilis
@samyoukilis
We follow this account, not so much for the humour, but for the glimpses into the minutia of life overseas.
Sam, a New-York-bred photographer who lives in Mexico, travels the world in search of small frames of exquisite street life and nature. His feed is about moments in time, old women slicing prickly pear for market, a barista in Florence pouring coffee into a glass, rain falling into a gutter.
There are no gimmicks, music or filters, just parallel universes that take you far from where you are now. Addictive viewing.
