Like many public events, the annual Ronald McDonald House Charities’ Red Wig Run will look a little different this year.
Instead of a host of red, orange and yellow-wigged Canberrans gathering on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, the Red Wig Challenge will see families, friends and colleagues dress up to take part virtually, wearing their wigs to walk, run, ride or glide kilometres to raise money to support families of seriously ill children.
Kicking off on 1 October and continuing for the remainder of the month, the Red Wig Challenge hopes to raise at least $50,000 to pay for almost 380 nights of accommodation at the Ronald McDonald House Charities which supports the families of seriously ill children whose worlds have been turned upside down.
Joining in this great cause is simple—just register, determine how many kilometres you’d like to cover within the month, track your progress and fundraise to #gothedistance.
You don’t even have to supply your own red wig! Once you register, one will be sent to you so you can make sure to share your progress on social media to raise awareness.
While it’s disappointing the Red Wig Run can’t take place as normal, RMHC Canberra Executive Officer Michelle McCormack says this makes the challenge even more accessible.
“While it was sad that due to COVID that we wouldn’t be able to witness the sea of red wigs around Lake Burley Griffin supporting our cause, we are thrilled that launching the virtual Red Wig Challenge means it is more inclusive for people from across the region who have previously used one of our Programs.”
Throughout the year, RMHC’s Programs—including the House, Family Room and Family Retreat—support over 300 families accessing support for their seriously ill child while in hospital.
To fund these vital offerings, more than $500,000 must be fundraised each year. Now’s your chance to help RMHC reach that target.
