The Trish Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation: A mum and dad’s promise to their daughter

Posted on

The Trish Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation was inspired by Trish Langsford who, having lost her battle with multiple sclerosis, passed away at the age of 30.

The Foundation was founded in 2000 by a passionate team of volunteers, with the specific goal of pursuing a cure or preventive strategy for multiple sclerosis. Trish’s parents made a promise to her that they would not give up in the pursuit of the Trish Foundation’s goal.

The Foundation is staffed by a team of dedicated, unpaid volunteers and every dollar raised is placed into research. The Directors of the Foundation have covered the administrative expenses since inception, with the Foundation’s first Canberra fundraiser taking place this Saturday 4 November with a delicious lunch at East Hotel – and places are still available.

“The Foundation is named after my daughter, Trish Langsford, who was struck down in the prime of her life by multiple sclerosis,” says Carol Langsford OAM, Chair of the Trish Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation.

“As well as being an A1 tennis player and first-grade hockey player, Trish represented New South Wales in the Open Women’s Cricket Team and captained the Australian Youth Cricket Team against New Zealand. She was also a member of the Australian Squad and was described by cricket writer Amanda Weaver as one of the most gifted players in Australia.”

Despite her vibrant career, the cruel disease that is MS forced Trish to give up her beloved sports. Now, Carol hopes for a future where no one has to say goodbye to their daughter like she did.

“Trish passed away at age 30 having spent four and a half years in a nursing home with end-stage multiple sclerosis. She was completely paralysed, artificially fed and morphine was administered four hourly during that entire time. Trish understood everything that was said but could not communicate. It is hard to imagine what she could have been thinking.”

To date, the Foundation has raised over $7 million for high-quality, peer-reviewed MS Research Projects and has contributed to remarkable progress, including world-first ground-breaking findings and the Foundation is working closely with MS scientists around Australia towards a common goal.

You can help them reach this goal by attending the lunch or bidding in their online auction, which will be live until 4.20 pm this Saturday 4 November and is open to everyone. You can bid here.

The lunch will feature a delicious Long Italian Premium Lunch with wine, beer and soft drinks and a glass of Prosecco on arrival with 100% of funds raised going towards the Trish Foundation’s research.
